Lion as VB guest on Mac hardware?
Has anyone had success yet getting the lion GM release running as a guest on vb?
EULA Licensing should be ok now for client or server lion so long as host is Apple HW.
I don't find lion server stable enough for daily use as my main os, and would like to continue path finding in a VM.
No progress in several tries to upgrade a SL server vm or clean install lion from a dmg or iso.
I already have virtual box 4.1 beta running as host on lion GM with snow leopard as guest.
I'm looking to turn that the other way around with lion as guest.

Yes, this would be great to run Lion as a guest in VirtualBox. Then it's useful to have guest extensions. It's not for server anymore. I would like to test software which have video and sound.
Please add Lion support and give us guest extensions!
Thank you very much!

So? We don't care. There is no full install media for Lion, so there is no way to install it atm. Complain at Apple, not here.

Re: Lion as VB guest on Mac hardware?
Fixes for the upcoming Lion release were just added in the 4.0.12 maintenance release. From what I understand you should be able to install the client (still waiting for official word), but the restrictions of apple/MAC hardware, and apple/MAC host OS are still in the Apple/MAC SLA. AFAIK Oracle still has no plan for "MAC" guest additions.
Re: Lion as VB guest on Mac hardware?
For those that are presumably developers using the GM version, the downloadable media contains a DMG which can be used to burn or otherwise create an ISO that can be used to perform a clean install. They could also install the 10.6 version and upgrade the guest OS to 10.7 as millions will do in the next week.Sasquatch wrote:So? We don't care. Never burned a CD, a DVD, copied something to a USB stick or booted from an ISO/DMG?There is no full install media for Lion
There is an InstallESD.dmg.so there is no way to install it atm.
Why? I asked here, because VirtualBox can't install Lion as a guest, which is allowed by Apple.Complain at Apple, not here
For the host or for the guest? There are problems to install Lion as a guest. At my Apple MacBook Pro Unibody with Snow Leopard as a host, 100% SLA compatible.Fixes for the upcoming Lion release were just added
Without Mac guest additions it's nearly useless to test (multimedia) software.AFAIK Oracle still has no plan for "MAC" guest additions.
Something I'll note in this thread:
Sorry, if I was a bit euphoric in my first post. But I was happy about new license from Apple, which allow Lion as guest system. Now it's possible to test software without a 2nd Mac.
But if you have problems, getting angry, be frustrated or think everyone use non Apple hardware if someone ask about OS X as a guest: why don't you remove OS X guest support all in all?
Thanks.
Re: Lion as VB guest on Mac hardware?
The problem is the current virtualbox EFI does not check / pass through the current machine model info to the installer.
So the current Lion installer says 'I don't understand this machine' even when it IS a machine legally verified by Apple to allow virtualization / installation of Lion.
Persons have shown again and again that Virtualbox runs OS X as a guest fine (search google, youtube). It is the native EFI booting that has always been an issue and persons have resorted to various hackintosh boot CDs instead.
If the EFI shell could allow passthrough of the machine model everything would be happy...

Re: Lion as VB guest on Mac hardware?
The devs know about Lion not working. Since none of the paying customers asked for OSX support, it's something that's not high on the list of things to do. I reckon drag'n'drop is higher. Still, Server is the only variant currently supported. Since Lion doesn't really make a difference between desktop and server, you just have to wait it out or stick to SL.

@stmiller:
Thank you for the technical limits that exist!
@Sasquatch
Thank you for the statement and the reason!
Now I know I should wait for VMware Fusion and sadly I can't use phpvirtualbox (one of the best reasons to use VirtualBox).

When I try to install from an ESD, I get an error message saying, "This version of Mac OS X is not supported on this platform! REASON: Unsupported 32-bit only CPU"

As stated before, Lion is not supported. You're also missing a setting, Lion is 64 bit.mdurisseau wrote:When I try to install from an ESD, I get an error message saying, "This version of Mac OS X is not supported on this platform! REASON: Unsupported 32-bit only CPU"

Which setting am I missing? The processor on this MacBook is 64-bit, the kernel will not run in 64-bit...
