shell prompt with Yosemite ISO file

Post by jason_louisville »

Host mid-2021 MacBook Pro running macOS 10.14.6
VB 6.1
Guest macOS 10.10
Downloaded the .dmg file from Apple, used Disk Utility to convert to .cdr, then changed extension to .iso.
Added virtual machine following defaults for Yosemite, aside from allocating about twice the default memory.
Getting stuck on the this shell prompt (same as when using the .dmg file directly). Tried to add log file, but strangely file size exceeds max allowed.

Any thoughts?

Skimmed through the log file to see what makes sense to me. This appears to be where it falls apart, though I don't know enough to figure out what happened:

The downloaded installer is not bootable. You must extract the installation files from the installer. This is covered in the "sticky" topic at the top of the forum. Create OSX ISO from the OSX Install app

Even the ISO file is not bootable?

I tried following the steps in that post, but have no idea how to run a bash script and couldn't figure out how to use the GUI program (looks like it wants you to drag-and-drop a DMG file, but nothing happened and I couldn't find any detailed instructions). I see the idea is to use Mac's Disk Utility to convert DMG to ISO, so that's what I did.

The dmg file you are using contains an Installer application. Open the dmg file and drag the Installer application onto the GUI app.

There are numerous guides on the internet for creating a bootable installer for MacOS X Yosemite. You will find that most require the use of the Terminal and running shell commands.

Creating an ISO copy of your dmg file is NOT going to be a bootable image.

Thanks for shedding some light on this. Found Apple's instructions on creating a bootable installer, which states that downloading macOS through App Store saves the download to Applications folder. Now that download does open in the GUI app, and it's working on creating the installer now.

I avoided the App Store download previously, thinking the DMG file would be easier. Guess that was my first mistake.

Did you just recently download the Yosemite installer from the App Store? How is that possible? I'm wrestling with the same challenge.
