Launching windows from a usb

Post by Derekk »

Hi guys,

I'm a little new to VirtualBox so please be a little patient with me..

I run virtual box from my MacBook Pro Big Sur, however, I was running out of space and needed to delete the large windows folder. I still really want to use virtual box as it is crucial for some analysis that I run on excel (needs to be windows excel). Is there a way I can run windows of a USB stick through virtualBox?

Many thanks

For a few minutes, until the USB stick overheats.

A USB 3 or faster external drive containing an SSD would work well, though. Just be careful not to unplug it while the VM is running.

Once you have the external drive connected to the Mac, right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window and use the Move command to move the whole VM to the external drive. Let the Mac sit idle while you do this, it's a lot of data to move. (I would make a full backup of the Mac, just in case: it is a computer and will glitch at precisely the wrong time...)
