Solaris and Sun Studio

Post by Paolo_R »

Virtual Box 3.1.6 on Windows 7 pro 64 bit.

Have installed Solaris 10_1009 in VB. Is it possible to use Sun Studio now that I have a Solaris VM?

Thanks

Thank you for your succinct reply ! :D

The reason I asked is that, being a complete newcomer to Virtual Box, I was wondering how - given that my host system is Windows 7 - I would be able to load a Linux/Solaris download package in tar.bz format.

I assume that I would be able to unpack the package into a Windows folder. But how do I then get it to install in Solaris?

Sorry for the newb questions.

Aha, there's the real question. :-)

The easiest route is to just download it in Solaris directly. Don't download to Windows first (although, that's possible in theory). Start up your Solaris VM, Firefox is built in, use that to download the file. Then bunzip / tar xf it as necessary and either run it (if it's a sh file) or if they give you a pkg, do a pkgadd -d.

Mmm, I'll have to think about this! It's a long time since I did any Unix/Linux command line stuff so I'll have to tread carefully to avoid stuffing up my installation.
