Unable to install Solaris 10u6 on VirtualBox 3.0.4

Good day,

While trying to install the Solaris 10u6 guest having the attached configuration, installation crashes after detecting the network interface, with BIOS INT13 error stating that passed parameters are invalid. (Log file also attached). Various other configurations (ACPI on/off, IO APIC on/off, PIIX3/PIIX4/ICH6 channel controllers) have been tried and all have had the same result. The CPU does not support VT-x or AMD-V extensions.

A screenshot is also attached, showing the crash instant.

Finally, Windows reports the crash as taking place in virtualbox.exe while executing code in vboxdd.dll.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried the current version of Solaris (10u7)?

That's what I'm currently running. I had 10u6 installed on earlier versions of VBox successfully. Haven't tried on 3.0.4 though.

No, I haven't - I was hoping that someone's bulb would light and spare me some pain...but I will try with 10u7 if necessary. What version of VBox have you installed 10u7 on?

I did the initial install under 3.0.2 I believe, then upgraded to VBox 3.0.4. So we're not exactly the same on that. Host is Vista x64. Installing Solaris as 64-bit.

Thank-you for the info. 10u7 download under way. I'll post back with results later on though I'm still hoping to resolve this issue.

This is a quick note to post that, using an ISO image of the Solaris 10 update 7 DVD, installation is proceeding smoothly. The two differences with respect to the failed installations are:

1. Solaris 10 release (7 instead of 6)
2. Use of an ISO image instead of a DVD pass-through

I note the same error regarding the invalid parameters passed to the INT 13 BIOS call in the log. I will post the log as soon as the installation has finished.

The problem seems to have been the use of the DVD-R as the installation source.

I aborted the Solaris 10u7 installation and took an ISO image of the 10u6's DVD-R.

I proceeded to install from the 10u6 ISO image and the installation proceeded successfully past the point where it had previously failed.

Is this a bug?

Sounds like a bug to me! Although, I've never tried the DVD pass-through. Never even thought to try it, all my OS "discs" are ISO images on a server.

I occasionally carry out Solaris installations and find it handy to have the DVD in my disc carry case - it wasn't too useful this time though
