Guest internet connectivity mostly hosed in 3.0.0

Post by rasta »

Setup: 32-bit WinXP host, 32-bit Solaris 10 u7 guest. With Vbox 3.0.0, guest connectivity to the internet is terrible and intermittent, while host connectivity is fine. Nothing has changed with the network or with guest network configuration since 2.2.4. I use NAT networking for the guest. Rebooting the guest does not help.

Has anyone else experienced such a problem? Any ideas what is going on or how to fix it?

Thank you in advance...

Did you update the GA's? or if you did try an older version?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am using 3.0.0 Solaris Guest Additions. My guest connectivity is still significantly slower than normal, but not dead. Do you have any ideas as to how I can diagnose the issue?

I just loaded Firefox 3.5 onto the guest. I hope that has not messed anything up. The Firefox process seems to taking up too much guest CPU.

Also, the bidirectional clipboard does not seem to be working. I cannot paste data from the guest to the host and vice-versa.

Have you tried to change the Network adapter to the IntelPRO/1000 MT?
I have been reading of a few that this fixed their problems.

My network adapter is, and always has been, the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (NAT).

Speakeasy speed test to LA server:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Host: download, 13825 kbps; upload, 1965 kbps

Guest: download, 8378; upload, never completes.

The JDS network connectivity icons keep flashing and flashing. Not normal.

I could uninstall 3.0.0 and go back to 2.2.4, but what a pain. Is there a way to install the GAs of 2.2.4 without reverting Vbox to 2.2.4?

I went back to 2.2.4, and connectivity is "normal" with 3.0.0 GA still installed:

host: 14546/5240 kbps

guest: 10104/2090 kbps, second test: 13748/928 kbps, third test: 10078/1238 kbps

With 2.2.4 and 2.2.4 GA:

guest: 10845/1552 kbps, second test: 8381/1579, third test: 11458/1211 kbps (basically same as above)

Bidirectional clipboard works.

in beta the NAT netowrking was "hosed" it seems not to have been fixed for GA 3.0.0
(interesting...)

I used bridged in the end as that worked :-), but NAT sure did not. see bata feed back
area for the long version.

Can anyone confirm that NAT code was changed from beta 2 to 3.0.0 GA ?

Uh-oh. NAT appeared to work fine in 2.2.4. Could it be broken in 3.0.0?

Well rasta

see the beta comments on 3.0.0 on solaris (I have posted to it as well)

Looks to me like its still bust in the "shipping" product, and the error looked like
it was low level code as it affected all emulations.

It would manifest itself as "very slow" networking with loads of packed loss
if you drilled down. Any way see the thread. I switched to Bridged so
I could down load some stuff to my solari 2009.6 image etc and have
been using that since :-(, I did use the host only connection too and that
also worked fine.

(host: windows XP 32bit, Guest Sol2009.6 64bit, now VB3.0.0)

This issue (bug #4343) has apparently been fixed in SVN.

It does not look like the NAT networking problem has been fixed in 3.0.2. Internet connectivity is still slow and intermittent in a Solaris guest.

Networking is not all fixed yet. I've got 3.0.2 installed, Host XP, Guest, both OpenSUSE and OpenSolaris. Networking is slow, DNS lookups seem particularly bad, they're universally slow, it seems. Long-open connections seem to get dropped. I dunno, it's just bad. Switched back to 2.2.4, and everything is fine, even with the 3.0.2 Guest Additions installed. There was an improvement from 3.0.0->3.0.2, in that the guest doesn't seem to hang anymore, but still a problem.
