OmniOS can't boot.

Post by hack3rcon »

Hello,
I installed the OmniOS, but it can't boot:

Which part of my VM configuration is incorrect?

Thank you.

Without a vbox.log at least, we can't tell. You should know how to provide one of those. :D

Also please provide a download link where you got this OS's ISO.

FWIW the second screenshot of the VM window shows a working Virtualbox VM and an OS that is running something OS-ish. OmniOS seems to have booted, at least part way.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply.
The VM log is: https://pastebin.com/DmdWJG5E
I downloaded the ISO file from https://omnios.org/download.html

Though we did have a forum glitch for a few days where Upload Attachment wasn't working, it is now. Please use it, with zipped log files, just like you've done before: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=102143&p=496162#p496162

I'll try the OnmiOS installer shortly, thanks for the link.

I would reduce CPU allocation to 2 cores. I would increase graphics RAM to something MUCH more useful than 9MB. You are not short of RAM, so I'd max the latter out.

But I'm not convinced you have a VM problem - I see no errors or stalls. When did this VM last work?

Hello,
I increased memory to 4GB, CPU to 4 cores and VGA to 32MB, but not matter.
The VM never worked.

I said to reduce to CPU to 2 cores, not increase it to 4. Allocating 75% of available CPU to guest code is bad enough, raising it to 100% is... not productive.

Sorry, my own projects leave me with little time for that kind of thing.

The VBox.log file didn't indicate any issue to me. The guest OS read ~80 MB from the virtual hard disk and switched only vCPU0 to 64-bit mode, which matches your screenshot.

You were using VirtualBox 7.0.2, please try VirtualBox 6.1.40 to avoid running into potential VirtualBox 7.0.x issues.

In the VM configuration, disable System > Processor > Nested VT-x/AMD-V, unless you really need nested virtualization.

Hello,
I disable the Nested VT-x/AMD-V feature, but the problem exists.

Thanks.

I loaded up OmniOS on 7.0.4 and got through the installer and to a login:

Intel Windows host. It did stop for a few seconds "configuring devices" after the Copyright line, but it did proceed to the login.
