will update vmadditon cause software activation?

Post by gg99 »

last time I installed vmaddition for w8.1 embedded vm without it caused ms ofc 2016 plus to ask for activation. that was for vb 5.1.12xxx
now I'm on vb 6.1.12 July. windows vm are working albeit the one vb found the old addition and flagged the vms with bold fonts and grey icon.
I like to update the vmaddition but not ready to tackle with active issues - too busy for that

Can anyone tell me if no problem activation installing the new vmaddition?

I have been using VirtualBox with all sorts of Windows guests for many years and I have never seen updating the GAs cause any activation problems.

The GAs are just guest OS drivers. They don't change the VM hardware recipe.

Installing or updating Guest Additions will never cause activation problems. Windows only asks to be activated when there is a major hardware change or Service Pack upgrade, and both seem to be exclusive to Windows XP, since at the very least Windows 7 did not ask for reactivation when I converted it into a VM.

Even if it does cause Windows to ask to be activated, you should be able to activate it regardless.
