Calibre e-reader text inverted in windows 10 guest VM

Postby SuffolkPunch » 25. Jan 2020, 13:38

Hi,

New to this forum. I hope someone can help with the following issue?

The issue: The latest 64- and 32-bit versions of Calibre (4.9) both display epub books in the e-reader with text upside-down and left-right flipped (I think). I have attached a snap of what it looks like

This image shows 'Circe' open in the Calibre e-boom editor. The e-book's HTML is displayed correctly. The rendered e-book text is not (upside-down etc).

According to Kovid Goyal the creator of Calibre
This will be some issue with the graphics card drivers compatibility with webengine.
See MobileRead Forums > E-Book Software > Calibre.

My temporary fix: The Calibre e-reader display problem goes away if the Win10 guest VM has 'Enable 3D acceleration' disabled. That's with the VBoxSVGA graphics adaptor.

I'm running VirtualBox is v. 6.1 r135662 (Qt 5.6.1) in Linux Mint 18.3 (64-bit Cinnamon) and the win 10 VM has the 6.1 guest additions CD installed.

Kudos for trying a workaround and getting one that works!

Take a look here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=92944 similar problem and solution, and a Bugtracker ticket.

Since turning off 3D acceleration fixes the flip, I would try up/downgrading host video drivers. 3D acceleration uses the host's video system to calculate guest video, and if there's a formatting error in the video data between host and guest, just such a flip/mirror/rotate could happen.

@scottgus1: thanks.

I don't feel sufficiently competent to mess with linux graphics drivers!

Hope the bug report you referenced helps (in the fullness of time).
