Win2000 and no sound

Post by bennyutzer »

hello there,

i have a problem that seems to be pretty noobish, yet i cant seem to figure it out.

My VirtualBox: 5.1.14r112924.
Host System: Windows 7 (6.1 Build 7601 SP1)
Guest System: Windows 2000 Professional (5.00.2195.6717.sp4)

i have set up a Virtual Machine with Windows 2000 as guest on a Machine with Windows 7. so my setup is [ Windows 7 ] > [ Windows 2000 ].

i have done nothing more than setting up the VM, installing Windows 2000, installing the Guest additions and thats it. for some reason i am not getting any sound. not in Windows, not in Windows Media Player or in any games. the sound on my Windows 7 host system works perfectly.

i have set the AC97 Audio Driver and Sound Card as standard wherever possible (see screenshots), and i can see the little audio symbol in the right lower corner. all audio devices seem installed properly, yet no peep out of the system. i have also not made any beginner mistakes (my speakers are on, windows sound is on full, virtual box is not muted, etc).

for some reason my images are not displayed properly, so here the plain links:

i dont know what else i can do. according to all threads that i found in this forum, it should work by now. it doesnt.

i have also uploaded my VHD to zippyshare. its a plain windows with a WAV file on the desktop, if anybody wants to try.

VHD: https://www31.zippyshare.com/v/7JUOoX5a/file.html
log-files: https://www104.zippyshare.com/v/8n0m2OmV/file.html

im glad for any helpful advice.

thx

I'd start by updating this to the latest version (5.2.28 or 6.0.6) as 5.1.14 is now two years old. There have been lots of changes to the audio subsystem in that time.

its somewhat unbelievable but now it works. i upgraded VirtualBox to the newest version, restarted my PC because VBox had some issues after upgrading, and now it works. thanks a lot for that advice.

does that mean sound in Win2000 never worked in previous VBox versions? just curious.

ok, now i am having a minor but strange problem: when setting up a new VM with windows 2000, after installing windows and launching it for the first time, the vm and Virtualbox always freeze. i have to restart my PC (host system) alltogether to solve that.

my pc is by no means working at capacity, yet VM and VB slow down to an almost complete halt. windows doesnt fully start, and VB reacts with massive delays.

any ideas for that?

Sound in a Win2K guest VM has always worked, something tells me that something's wrong with your host, not with VirtualBox.
