[Resolved] VBoxDrvInst.exe 5.2.16 on Windows 10 guest won't install

I am trying to upgrade my Windows 10 guest from 5.2.12 to 5.2.16 of Guest Additions. It fails like this:

I have connected the latest Guest Additions CD via the Devices menu and then tried:

1) Just installing and letting the installer clean up the old version
2) Using Windows Apps uninstall to remove 5.2.12, then rebooting
3) Running VboxWindowsAdditions-x86.exe /uninstall directly (with Run As Administrator) and rebooting
4) Manually uninstalling the Virtualbox display driver and system driver via Device Manager and rebooting

I continue to get the error you see above in the log.

My Windows 10 guest was working OK with 5.2.12, but I had some clipboard issues, which is why I have tried to upgrade it - along with it being "the right thing to do". I have made no settings changes to the VM itself.

I am at a loss on how to proceed from here. How can I get Guest Additions to install?

I have gotten farther.

The installation succeeded. However, the VirtualBox Graphics Driver has an error 37 and will not start.

I then tried a Safe Mode install with Compatibility Mode set to Windows 7 and Run as Administrator set. I installed 3D drivers (but not the experimental ones).

Same issue. I confirmed that 5.2.16 graphics drivers are now installed.

How to get the Graphics driver to work?

Thanks, tried it but it couldn't help. VirtualBoxAdditions or Oracle Virtualbox or any other combination did not show up in the program list. Choosing "not listed" as the screen indicated just came up with "sorry, can't help you".

Open to any other suggestions.

After much fooling around, I got it installed. The various things I did were:

1) Deinstall guest additions
2) Run System Recovery to reset the Windows files to their original state (restore point or whatever you have)
3) Make sure my VM has at least 128MB of video RAM (I set 256MB)
4) Boot into Safe Mode
5) Set guest additions installer to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode and as Administrator
6) Install guest additions again, choosing 3D drivers
7) When asked for experimental WDDM vs legacy, I say "No" (which installs WDDM drivers)
Reboot normally

This process worked. Some of it may not have been absolutely necessary. YMMV
