Windows 95 Has No Network Options

Post by RetroReginald »

Hello, I am brand new here to the forum, and I'm brand new to Virtualbox in general! I just installed the program a few days ago and I haven't used anything like it before.
With the help of video tutorials and WinWorld, I was able to get DOS 6.22, Windows 95 and 98 on Virtualbox and I'm literally so excited so I can play some old games again. But of course I face some issues. Windows 95 is working pretty great, except for the fact that I have no Network Options, so I can't share any folders with my host and guest machine, either. I don't think I can play games without Network Options, either?
Every time I boot Windows 95 up, I get the error message: Unable to load the dynamic link library msnp32.dll the system cannot find the file specified. Some or all of the following feature is not available: Microsoft Network.
As you can guess, it doesn't show up at all in Windows 95 in any shape, way or form. So how can I get it back? Obviously, the first thing I thought to do was get the file msnp32.dll, whatever the hell that is. So I got it downloaded, but now I don't know how exactly to put that into Windows 95. I know a similar question has been asked here before, but I didn't get a solution from it. So I thought I'd ask on my own.
Plus I have another question (though I'll probably make a separate topic for it later), but once I get Networking on here, how can I play some of the old games I have using the actual CDs? When I put them in my computer, my host recognizes them but the guest never does. They are old games that were specifically made for 95 and 98 so I know they should work.
Please excuse me if I sound so naive, I have zero experience with any of the stuff I'm doing here! If you need anymore information, let me know.

Copying one random DLL will do nothing. What you need to do is install the network support package from a proper Win95 install disk. Networking was seen as a specialist requirement in the Win95 era, and installing it is not for the faint hearted. Also bear in mind that this is a VirtualBox forum, we don't teach people how to use ancient operating systems, so your best bet is to Google for the Win95 information.

Better yet, abandon Win95 and install Win98SE. This is still no XP, but it has at least started off on the road. Networking in particular is a little easier to configure. However Win98SE still has no official support, no Guest Additions etc (so no GA shared folders).
