Well, lets start with: how is memory configured currently in your guests CONFIG.SYS file?

In the root folder of the guest drive is (or should be) a text file called "CONFIG.SYS". What does it contain? (at the guest C:\> prompt, type "type config.sys").
Re: how do I install Windows 95?
When Win95 was released, a Pentium 90 was a high spec machine. As faster PCs came about, it seemed there was a timing bug in Win95 which caused the dreaded Windows Protection Error on these faster PCs.
It may help to disable Vt-x if its enabled on the Win95 vm. This may slow things down enough to enable Win95 to run.
If not, I think Microsoft released a patch to fix the problem, but it may be difficult to find after all these years.

Re: how do I install Windows 95?
It does? Interesting. Thanks to Pt58.
I would track down that patch and install it, as VirtualBox is relying on VT-x/AMD-v more with each release.
Marking as solved.

Re: [Solved] how do I install Windows 95?
Glad the quick fix of disabling vt-x worked.
A quick google search for "win95 fast cpu fix" throws up loads of sites with fixes. I don't think Microsoft host the patch any more so it's a case of resorting to one of the other sites. I think I used a program called called fix95cpu successfully. As usual its worth virus scanning any 3rd party downloads before applying.
