audio playback clicks

I've got a Windows 7 VM running in MacOS.

I'm developing something that works with audio.

When I play back the audio, I get periodic clicks. When I play the same audio outside of the VM, it sounds fine.

I have a feeling the problem could be in the interface between VirtualBox and the host OS, perhaps some kind of timing issue, or a buffering latency (also timing related).

Is there anything I can do about this to eliminate the clicking?
