[Resolved] Windows guest can't detect my iPhone

Post by tipi64 »

Hello there.

I made a new installation for my VM, a Windows 7 64bits on Ubuntu 16.04.

But I have the same issue: I can't use the guest session (Windows) to use my iPhone. No device nor USB key were detected by the guest system. What can I do?

I split your post from the "Drag&drop failure host>guest and guest>host" as it had absolutely nothing to do with that topic. Please pick an appropriate topic next time. If one doesn't exist, create a new one, don't dump everything in one thread.

Please read the following thread: USB basics and troubleshooting, all of the posts. If you still have a problem after reading through the whole thing, please follow the advice on the last post.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hi Socratis, thanks for the help.

It was my 1st topic in fact, I have the same problems as the beginning for the drag&drop and the use of USB devices but I just reinstalled my Ubuntu session a few weeks ago.

I followed your tutorial but I can't enable USB 2.0 neither 3.0:

Code: Select all

Échec de l'ouverture de session pour la machine virtuelle Win 7.

Implementation of the USB 3.0 controller not found!

Because the USB 3.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started. To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 3.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND).

You need to either 1) discard the saved state, or 2) resume and then shut down the guest. You can't be making hardware changes to a VM while it's not completely shut down.

Your Windows 7 will need additional drivers.
tipi64 wrote:5.0.40_Ubuntur115130
That's the Ubuntu fork of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads). And you need to install the ExtPack from the same place if you want USB2/USB3 functionality.

I did it.

I removed this fork but the new one from the link doesn't want to be installed. I need to investigate further to understand why I can't install the official .deb version.

I stopped at the #3 point because of the issue for activating the USB 2.0. It's a little complicated to understand what you wrote for a non English fluent guy like me. I know it's boring to help bored people, sorry for that. if it's too much complicated to help me, help someone else please.

Good news, it was the graphic interface that has a bug. I made it in command line so I installed the official .deb version and the extpack.

But I can't open the guest:

Code: Select all

RTR3InitEx failed with rc=-1912 (rc=-1912)

The VirtualBox kernel modules do not match this version of VirtualBox. The installation of VirtualBox was apparently not successful. Executing

'/sbin/vboxconfig'

may correct this. Make sure that you do not mix the OSE version and the PUEL version of VirtualBox.

where: supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime what: 4 VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH (-1912) - The installed support driver doesn't match the version of the user.
Its an error message when the host is 32bits but I'm 64bits... I purged the previous installation following this tutorial.

When I launched the VM, it installed the USB pilots (I think). I will continue your tutorial.

Actually that would be #6: Guest support. But you got to read all of the posts, I told you so from the beginning. USB is anything but plug and play (actually, it can be sometimes, but not always). When problems occur, that's when you got to keep on reading.
tipi64 wrote:It's a little complicated to understand what you wrote for a non English fluent guy like me.
The answers would have been more or less the same, whether it was in a FAQ or as independent answers to specific questions. And your English is really good.
tipi64 wrote:if it's too much complicated to help me, help someone else please.
Really? That's the impression that you got? Because I told you to read the whole thing that was already answering your questions? Allow me to have a different opinion about helping others. Otherwise we wouldn't be having this conversation.
tipi64 wrote:I made it in command line so I installed the official .deb version and the extpack.
Nice! Now, create a filter for the iPhone according to #4: USB Filters and take it from there. Remember to plug the iPhone after the VM has completely started and you have logged in.

Ok so now, I add my profile to the vboxusers group and put 2.0 for the USB configuration.

But, when I connect my iPhone, it doesn't appear in the UBS menu, I don't have any device detected by VM.

I have an iPhone 5C, VendorID 12a8 if the file /var/lib/usbutils/usb.ids is correct. For the DeviceID, it's strange, the command xinput list gave me this:

Code: Select all

thibaut@ubuntipi:~$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2	[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4	[slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Mad Catz Mad Catz M.M.O.TE id=9	[slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3	[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=7	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ USB Keyboard id=10	[slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ USB Keyboard id=11	[slave keyboard (3)]
My iPhone isn't listed there  I tried with another phone without any success. So strange because Ubuntu mount all the devices but the VM doesn't see anything.

Sorry for the last post, I know it's a little bit boring to repeat all the time the same things. I try to do my best to make this VM correct and to forget forever the use of Windows but it's not easy to do. I found your message a little bit rude, it might be because I'm French

A phone is no (x)input device.
USB devices are listed with the 'lsusb' command. ;)

A USB filter is a series of "AND" conditional statements. So when you're filling in the filter values, you're telling the filter:
Capture a device with this VendorID, AND that ProductID, AND ...
A blank filter (not recommended!) will match anything, which is good if the device appears as a composite, i.e. presents as a number of different devices all connected at once. However the danger of a blank filter is the potential to grab the wrong device, e.g. you do not want to grab the host's USB keyboard and assign it to the guest! If you have a problem with the wrong device being grabbed then you'll need to add just enough information to the filter so that it matches your device only. But don't define the filter too narrowly, as that can lead to problems too. That's why your safest bet for a basic filter is to fill in the VendorID and ProductID only. The proper checklist for capturing a USB device with a filter is:
  1. Make sure that the Extension Pack (ExtPack) is installed on the host. The ExtPack must be the same version as the main VirtualBox program. The ExtPack is not the same as the Guest Additions! The ExtPack is installed on the host and adds support for a virtual USB2 host controller. VirtualBox 5.x.x added USB3 (xHCI) support as well.
  2. Make sure that at least USB2 (EHCI) is enabled in your VM settings. If your guest supports USB3 (xHCI), use that. See "Guest support" below. It is important to note that if your guest supports USB3, you should definitely enable that, even if your host does NOT support USB3 at the hardware or software level, mainly because the USB3 stack is much better designed compared to USB1 and USB2.
  3. Under VM Settings » Port » USB, create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. The Name is nothing more than a label and is not actively participating in the filtering process. You can change it at will. I usually use "Stick: XYZ" or "Joystick: ABC" or "Other: IJK".

  4. Unplug the device.
  5. Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to, reach the desktop, and wait until any disk activity has stopped.
  6. Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest.
I'm pointing out your mistakes, and I'm quoting from the FAQ. Please do not come back until you've actually read the FAQ. I don't like it particularly when I'm quoting myself. And I don't like it at all when I give some piece of advice and that advice is ignored.

Hello there ;)

Curious, I made it already before as I mentioned it.
Ok so now, I add my profile to the vboxusers group and put 2.0 for the USB configuration.

Yeah, of course it's wrong. I don't know what to put inside, check my last post ;)
