Audio latency 750ms

I'm trying to use Finale NotePad in my VirtualBox guest, and there is significant latency in audio playback. I measured it at 750ms using VLC with a sync test video. Is there any way to improve this? I'm running Windows 7 guest under MacOS 10.12 host on a recent MacBook Pro. VirtualBox 5.1.28 with guest additions installed. I'm using the Intel HD Audio controller. I tried the other two options (Soundblaster and AC97), and neither one works at all. After reading some forum post, I tried enabling HPET, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

If you want to run any kind of real-time workload, don't do it in a VM.
