Win7ProSP1 guest hanging with AHCI#0P0 returned rc=VERR_UNRESOLVED_ERROR

Post by StarboardBow »

Am running VBox v.5.1.18r114002 on Win7ProSP1 host with Win7ProSP1 VM guest.

For some unknown reason, VM guest suddenly hangs or sometimes errors out going into Suspended state and closing.

Looking at VM VBox.log file (see attached copy) at end of file there are logged numerous instances of the following messages:

AHCI#0P0: Write at offset ######### (###### bytes left) returned rc=VERR_UNRESOLVED_ERROR
AHCI#0: Port 0 reset
AHCI#0P0: Canceled write at offset ######### (###### bytes left) returned rc=VERR_UNRESOLVED_ERROR
AHCI#0P0: Canceled write at offset ######### (###### bytes left) returned rc=VINF_SUCCESS
AHCI#0P0: Canceled read at offset ######### (###### bytes left) returned rc=VINF_SUCCESS

Below is screenshot of VBox Manager->Settings->Storage setup of AHCI controller. Both physical host and VM guest have ample free disk space (multiple hundreds of GB free space)

Any insight as to what is causing error, and how to fix?

Looks to me like you're getting host drive errors. I suggest that you run chkdsk on it, including a thorough surface scan (probably an overnight job) if a quick scan finds nothing. If it makes funny ticking noises, sometimes pauses for long times during I/O, then I'd start shopping for a replacement drive.
