Trouble using USB and shared folder in Win 10 guest

Post by Jaymarkt »

Hi there,
my setup:
Mac OS 10.12.5 on MacBookAir 11" 2013
Virtualbox 5.1.22 r115126 extension pack installed (same release)
Guest: Windows 10

My problem:
I am unable to mount USB, use shared folders, and drag&drop.
During start or when inserting a USB device following message is prompted.

________________
Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS).

Fehlercode:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Komponente:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
----------------------

As I said, guest extensions are installed but don't seem to work properly.
I am lost...

Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks

Jaymarkt

For the USB question, look through here first: USB Basics and Troubleshooting

Be sure you have a USB controller enabled in the guest's main Virtualbox window settings.

Shared Folders will either require a network between the host and guest (see section 6 in the manual) or require Guest Additions to be installed in the guest OS.

Guest Additions are not the Extension Pack. The Extension Pack is installed within Virtualbox on the host OS. The Guest Additions are installed via the Guest Additions ISO in the guest OS. The guest's menu selection to "Insert the guest Additions CD" only puts the ISO in the guest's virtual CD drive. If the guest OS does not have Autoplay turned on you will have to manually run the installer from the guest's virtual CD drive. (<- you probably know this already, but you'd be surprised how folks confuse them.)

Guest Additions Shared Folders do not require a network between host and guest. However, GA SF's only allow transferring of files. They are not able to do everything a real Shared Folder through a real network can do, like run a program or access a database.
