Can not install guest additions on Windows 7

Post by Codec »

For some reason when ever I install guest additions to my Windows 7 vm it can no longer start, it just shuts down after showing its booting into windows. Only way to recover it is boot into safe mode in windows and uninstall the additions. Seem to be be related to the video drivers as if i remove it in device manger I can start again. However the very reason I am installing it is to run the vm at 1080p. Any help would be appreciated as this has had me pulling my hair out for a few hrs now.
Installing guest additions 5.1.18 and host os is ubuntu 14.04.5. Log attached.

00:00:00.454212 GUI: 2D video acceleration is disabled
So is 3D for that matter. You should enable both in the Display section of the VM Settings.
00:00:00.129868 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000002000000 (33 554 432, 32 MB)
Take it up to 128 MB, if not 256 MB. Again in the same section.
00:00:00.129361 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000004 (4)
00:00:00.225167 CPUM: Logical host processors: 8 present, 8 max, 8 online, online mask: 00000000000000ff
00:00:00.225228 CPUM: Physical host cores: 4
You have assigned all your CPUs to the VM. The host is going to run low on resources, since VirtualBox cares about physical processors, not logical ones. See: CPU Cores versus threads.
00:00:00.129678 [/Devices/ich9pci/] (level 2)
Any good explanation for enabling an experimental, not recommended feature? Please change it to the default PIIX3. VM Settings » System.

I have tried all of the above except 2d acceleration as it is grayed out. However I did find a work around by accident. If I try and just hit start it will show windows loading for a sec then just kick me back to the main window and show the vm status as aborted. However if I start it head less it starts fine and I can even see the vm in the preview window, but if i click show vm nothing happens. I set up vnc on the vm and just remote into it and that seems to work fine. Any ideas on what that could be? I am running this on a dedicated server from ovh and this is all in a tightvnc session witch I should have said before as this seem like an incompatibility with how i'm doing this. I have attached the log with the new setting trying to start it normal. And thank you for your time.
