USB stick fails to attach [SOLVED]

Post by 52ROSt »

Host: LM 17.3 KDE
Guest: W7 32 bit. and XP

Both VMs were running very well. When I wanted to attach again a USB stick today, but it did not work.
I get for both VMs the message:
Failed to attach the USB device USB DISK 3.0 [0110] to the virtual machine W732Pro_OS Clone.

Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
Shutting down the VMs, the VB, and the LM machine did not solve the problem.

What went wrong and why?
How can I fix the problem

What else do you have connected to your host? Any USB related software manager? With the USB device plugged in and the VM not running, post the output of the following commands:
  •
    VBoxManage -version
    VBoxManage list extpacks
    VBoxManage list usbhost
    VBoxManage list usbfilters
    VBoxManage showvminfo "Your_Virtual_Machine_Name"
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

@socratis - Thanks a lot for your help!

As the output list is very long, I attached it in txt-file.
[Mod edit: Very thoughtful of you, but it's OK, it's not too big, I replaced your attachment with the actual output, so that others can take a look at it easier]

Thanks to the unknown editor. It definitely is better to be read in your version. I need to keep this mind for the future.

Now I hope that with this, I am step closer to solution.

What??? This is the 2nd time in as many days that a message of mine disappeared! With no administrative logs. That's got to be really weird. The thing is that besides editing your post, I replied to it, but ... it's not here! I'll try to figure out what's going on. Here's what I said...

Everything looks OK, except maybe one minor thing; make sure that you delete the "Revision", "Product" and mainly the "Serial Number" values from your filter. I don't really think that it will solve your problem, I just want to be safe than sorry.

I'd also like to see the output of the commands:
  • id
And finally, is this a USB3 device? If so, can you plug it in a USB2 port or a USB2 hub?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Are you sure you actually posted it? When I've had similar events I soon realized that while I had written the post, I had been distracted towards the end and minimised the browser without posting it.

I'm in the 95+% range sure. I work with tabs and I rarely close a reply. And when I do it's a conscious decision. I've never had something like that happen in 7 years [1], otherwise I wouldn't bring it up. I will try to find the timeframe that my 1st message "disappeared" and write down the times. If there's a 3rd incident, I'll contact one of the admins and see what they think about it.

[1] : Actually I had two of my messages in the past "disappear". I suspected "foul play" from a moderator, because (let's face it) sometimes emotions run high and some comments shouldn't have been posted. I contacted the moderator and asked if my message was deleted because of language/content/attitude. Confirmed... ;).

@socratis

Thanks a lot for your help.

As I observed yesterday already that suddenly all USB devices can be attached as I want to do it, I did not implement the proposes changes.

Today I observed again that I can attach any USB and they work simply perfect ( and I did several restarts and log-off and ons today). This means that your analysis of the terminal output, that all is set correct, is perfectly correct.

I will observe what the VMs are doing in the next and get back to your or flag the post SOLVED.

As for the not to be seen post of yours, don't worry too much. I appreciate your help VERY much!
