Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14xxx fails
I have Windows 10 Insider Preview 14915 installed on VirtualBox 5.1.6 on a OS X 10.11.6 host. Yesterday the upgrade to 14926 became available. The upgrade process progresses at first normally but ends with a rollback to 14915. Has anyone else seen this issue and what could be the reason for this behavior?

Reason: Changed the version from 14926 to 14xxx, since this has turned into an ongoing discussion over several versions.

Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
I had the same thing happen to me. I tried the upgrade twice, once last night and about an hour ago. Both times it rolled back to 14915. Donna's note about VirtualBox was: "Oracle VM VirtualBox will crash on launch after upgrading to this build."

Same issue here. Hope they fix it! I went ahead and switched back to the Slow ring for Windows 10 IP updates.
Edited to add: The upgrade failed gracefully and it rolled back to the previous build for me, as well.

Same happened here.
After reboot the screen is garbled, windows restart itself 3 times before rolled back to previous build.
I switched on video recording to see what is on BSOD.

Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
Upvoted. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm still not clear on Windows 10 licensing. My only "license" is as a Windows Insider. So I have to keep downloading preview builds. Anyone know if I can roll back to a stable build from the Slow ring? If so, when would it expire?
Just weighing options here. I have one piece of software I have to run on Windows. I could get a cheap Windows 10 laptop, refurbished desktop, or an Intel Compute Stick to accomplish the same thing (I have a spare 27" monitor, keyboard, and mouse to connect to any of those), if continuing to run a Windows 10 Insider Preview guest isn't going to be viable.

Slow ring is an Insider thing as well. This is a valid Insider Level
Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
This is listed on MS 14926 info as something that is broke by the 14926 build.
Hoping for a VirtualBox fix before the 14915 build expires on 10/01/16.
Maybe MS will issue another build before 10/01/16 that works with VIrtualBox...

In the release notes for that build on the Windows Insider website.

Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
I can't agree really with this. I'm very far from perfect English, but I think release notes statesBillG wrote:In the release notes for that build on the Windows Insider website.
- Virtuallbox will crash on new build
- not new build will crash in Virtualbox.
"Oracle VM VirtualBox will crash on launch after upgrading to this build."
There is an other thread (viewtopic.php?f=38&t=76813) here on the forum. Jacob tried a lot of VB version, all of those are worked.

Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
I downloaded the last stable build (14393, I think) and reinstalled it last night. No more expiration date and I opted out of receiving future Insider Preview builds.

Re: Windows 10 Insider Preview Upgrade to 14926 fails
Starting with build 14926 - the appear to be 2 issues.
1) The issue referenced by Microsoft in their known issues that VirtualBox crashes - this is specific to running Virtualbox as a host on that build, not running that build as a guest
2) When running the 14926 (and the newly released 14931) build as a guest - you get a bunch of garbled white blocks on the startup screen. The guest reboots itself twice and then you get the options to go into safe mode, restore previous build, etc. This appears to be a graphics driver related issue. I have found that if you get into that state - don't revert back to the prior build. Power off the guest, go into the display settings for the guest and check the box to enable 3D Acceleration. After that, the guest runs just fine with builds 14926 and 14931. I suspect VirtualBox needs to update the display driver so it works correctly without the additional acceleration option.
