existing VM and change chipset from PIIX3 to ICH9

Post by alain.roger »

Hi,

i have a VM having as guest win7 for testing purpose.
This VM has been created using chipset PIIX3 and now for testing purpose i need to change it to ICH9.

Is there any option or tool that can make the change without crashing the VM ?

thx.

That is a Windows question, not a VirtualBox one. The VM doesn't crash, Windows 7 does. I hope you see that there's a big difference.

Although it's off topic, I'll give a brief answer: you could try using the "repair" feature on the Win7 setup DVD. Otherwise it's a reinstall job. Oh, and if you succeed in repairing the installation then Windows 7 will want to be reactivated, since it's obviously a huge hardware signature change.

the issue is that even the VM does not start...
so VB does not boot on VM disk at all...

i did a test just right now and create a brand new VM with a fresh windows installation. Firstly i had ICH9 chipset set in VM settings and once host graphical card attached to VM graphical card (guest card) no more boot on VM disk is possible.
i tried to detach it but i get a message that nothing is attached..

so it's not really a windows issue from my point of view...

You have to boot from the original Windows 7 setup DVD, as I already mentioned.

FWIW, I have a several Windows VMs (XP, 7, 8.1, 10), all of them setup with the PIIX3 chipset. I changed the chipset to ICH9 and Windows started fine, all of them. In the WinXP and Win7 cases, new hardware was detected, asked me to reboot and everything is working after that. I'm not sure how I could verify this in the Device Manager, but if someone knows where to look, I'd be happy to help.

to make a clear statement about the issue.

Firstly i created a VM using ICH9 and windows 7. It booted very well without any issue.
once i attached host graphical card to guest video card everything went well. But on first boot after attaching it, it generates the error message.

if i change ICH9 for PIIX3 it boots even on the windows DVD

You DO realize that this should have been a part of the initial description of the issue, right? Jeez... Could you please mark the topic as [MEA CULPA] or something similar so that other users and/or Google won't lead here?

Excuse me, but how does this match in any way with your original description of the problem? If you created a VM with ICH9 then where did the chipset change discussion come from?
