Extension pack and /etc/group were aalready set as suggested.
So - - no change = no USB devices (or ipod)

I have re-installed vbox and the extpack...
/home/beckwith/Downloads # VBoxManage list extpacks
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 5.0.2
Revision: 102096
Edition:
Description: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 Host Controller, Host Webcam, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM, Disk Encryption.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
Why unusable:
/home/beckwith/Downloads #
Now USB is not greyed out. But in Windows 7 I can only see the "C" drive.
CD says "please" mount one - - - does nothing.
No USB devices accessible

Also no shared folders.

I have re-installed everything (making the VDI larger too).
USB is still greyed out. Plugging an iPod is not recognised.
I tried adding a filter (defaults) - but as I don't know what
these filters are supposed to do so it was long shot.

This is Linux Mint 17.2, hosting Window7Pro-sp1.

Have you created a filter or do you go to the devices tab at the top and not see any device/s?

From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Do you see the device in the device tab? Is it visible to the guest?

Bit confused about exactly where this "device tab" is.
If you mean the Devices in WindowsExplorer, then no, only
the optical drive shows.
