Windows XP Guest Fails to Boot from Raw Disk

I currently dual boot Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Dell desktop with 3GB of memory. WinXP resides in partition 2 of a Dell factory-configured 160GB SATA hard drive, with partition 1 (FAT) and partition 3 (FAT32) containing Dell stuff. Ubuntu resides on and boots from a 60GB ATA Ultra hard drive of its own.

I want to run my current installation of WinXP in a VBox virtual machine, with Ubuntu as the host OS. So far, I have managed to install VBox, generate a rawdisk virtual image of the entire physical hard disk (/dev/sda), and attach it to a new virtual machine (the latter done in the GUI). When I Start the virtual machine, however, WinXP tries but fails to boot; instead the Innotek splash screen shows, then appears the error screen that WinXP shows for a failed boot, offering several options for a reboot attempt, including from the "Last Known Good Configuration" and "Start Windows Normally" (actually, sometimes the error screen does not appear, just a blank screen, but the end effect is the same).

When this occurs, the seconds counter is counting down to zero, where it stops, instead of trying a reboot, and I can find no key sequence (host or guest) that has any effect. When I finally Close the virtual machine window and VirtualBox has powered it off, the log (which I will post in full below) shows, at the point of failure:

Guest Log: BIOS: int13_harddisk: function 15, unmapped device for ELDL=81

(I should note here that my BIOS recognizes the Ubuntu hard drive as hd0, and the WinXP hard drive as hd1)

Interestingly, if I then dual boot the real WinXP using the normal process, it starts with the same error screen, but I am able to choose "Start Windows Normally" and WinXP successfully boots.

Doesn't all of this seem to indicate that the virtual image that VBox presents to WinXP for booting isn't exactly correct?

As advised in several other message threads, I have made sure that sda is not mounted, and that all of sda* have permission values of 777.

If I had to guess I'd say that it's due to driver problems. Windows is configured to load drivers that support the hardware in the system where it was installed. When you load it in the VM, the drivers that windows is using do not match the hardware that the VM is emulating. You may be able to start windows in safe mode, then install different drivers. Of course, if you do that, when you try to boot the OS natively, it probly won't work. Anyway, hope this helps,
