I set up an XP guest to test a slipstreamed XP w SP3 install CD. The host OS's (I synchronize the .vdi to several hosts) are several flavors of Vista and XP w SP3. XP was installed on a .vdi disk configured as IDE Primary Master. I decided to run the .vdi disk as SATA for the boost in performance over IDE.

Just some terse notes:
(1) For SATA functionality under XP I used the latest RAID/AHCI Intel Matrix Storage Manager, v8.2.0.1001 of 6/2/2008.
(2) The VB setting for SATA controller must be activated. Else the Intel install quits stating the machine does not meet minimum requirements. With the SATA Controller active the Intel AHCI driver installs correctly.
(3) With the Intel AHCI driver installed, I changed VB setting for the disk from IDE Primary Master to SATA Port 0.
(4) This configuration boots successfully and is much faster than IDE.

I made an XP SP3 with the intel SATA Drivers, WMP 11 and IE7. Windows CD Install boots, sees the drive, formats and copies the files then reboots again. It loads, boots into the the first stages of the install, continues setting the OS up but then I get a bluescreen. I tried it twice, same problem. Do you have any idea what's happening?

Sorry, I don't know what is your problem.

I installed "plain vanilla". To convert to SATA I then added the Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers.

Yea I got it to work after I did IDE install then switched to SATA. I was installing the OS under a SATA drive first and that was giving me the blue screens.

From my experience (not in the VirtualBox environment) the SATA driver loaded by 'F6' off diskette at the beginning of the XP installation is adequate to complete the installation.

However after an initial installation I found 'best practice' is to (re)load the SATA driver into the XP environment.

I found this true for Intel and nVidia SATA controllers.

Wierd,

Everytime I make a CD with the drivers for the chipset built in, it works fine. Just didnt work for Vbox this time with the SATA drivers.

Ok, the Sata part of Intel's Matrix driver works. But what about the RAID part?

I get always Fatal: Could not read from the Boot Medium when trying to get the Vista guest installation started. Log shows no data transferred on any Sata port. Config as IDE doesn't help, VB doesn't see the array.

Maybe I should install a single Sata drive on another port, move the relevant VB files there so that I can start the Vista installation. Then with RAID drivers installed I move files back into the array and change the setup.

Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

it worked when i started off with IDE, installed the SATA drivers, then shutdown the OS, go and setup the virtual drive from IDE to sata then boot in.

When you install the Intel Matrix driver are you doing so because you have that on your system or it's supported within VB to support SATA drives and performance?

When you say you switch from IDE to SATA are you doing so in the F12 screen or in the VB settings screen?

Sorry I'm used to VirtualPC2007 so I'm learning to play with a more feature rich application.

you do all the changes of the VM with it's harddrive settings. You pick whether it's IDE or SATA. not inside the windows VM.

I dont remember... You have to insatll the OS from scratch in IDE mode. After that's done, you install the raid drivers. Then you change the Vbox machine from IDE to SATA, then boot into windows and it will work afterwards.

The latest Intel AHCI drivers are now 8.5, and cause BSODs during install and after install. WinXP SP3 slipstreamed, AHCI drivers slipstreamed.

Last time I tried the Intel 8.2 AHCI drivers (F6 floppy);
the text phase of the Windows XP SP2 completed just fine,
using a 10GB disk on SATA Port 0 as the installation target.


But after the first reboot from the SATA HDD, the windows splash
screen appears, the GUI part of the installer starts, and it's busy
for a few minutes "Installing Devices". But it's crashing with a BSOD
during the "Installing Devices" phase, with

*** STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x82BCAB90, 0x82BCAD04, 0x805FA7A8)

(Installing to an P-ATA virtual disk works just fine)

I don't have the error in front of me, but it was a STOP error, with no driver(s) or other components listed.
