Windows XP "Aborted"

Post by lger »

How do I keep my Windows XP from constantly aborting? It'll be cruising along just fine then abort for no apparent reason. I'm running Windows XP inside of Mint Linux - latest of both will all upgrades. 20GB HD assigned, 1024 Memory assigned (System has 4 MB), 128MB assigned for video. Everything works VERY well when it's working. Last few lines of the last log file:

00:19:09.952 /PROF/VM/Halt/Yield 650 ticks/call ( 6916263680 ticks, 10639564 times, max 18406896, min 548)
00:19:09.952 /TM/1nsSteps 5374 times
00:19:09.952 ********************* End of statistics **********************
00:19:10.314 USB: Successfully reset device 'proxy 152d:2336'
00:19:10.316 Changing the VM state from 'DESTROYING' to 'TERMINATED'.

Would send entire file but I don't know how to link it.

VMWare server works fine with same programs running but would prefer to go with your software. Thanks!

Same problem - XP Aborts on VirtualBox, but not VMWare

Post by jcronkhite »

I would much rather use VirtualBox, but I need this to be stable as I use this VM for managing a Windows domain. Does anyone have anything on this at all? I'm using the latest VirtualBox on Ubuntu 7.04 (32bit). My system is an Intel Core Duo 2.0 with 1GB of RAM. I'm using 384MB for the VM on a 40GB Virtual Disk. I was using 512 but lowered as was recommended in an attempt to solve the "aborted" problem. It obviously didn't work. :(

The last lines in your log don't show anything. Please post the entire file or put it on pastebin.

By the way, using 128 MB for video ram is just a waste of memory. You only need as much as is required for holding the framebuffer. 8 MB is more than sufficient. Just because you can change it, doesn't mean you should. :)

I'm interested in this too as I've increasingly been getting sudden aborts. Very annoying as I work on a critical app within the virtual machine.

My logs have multiple entries such as this in them.

00:35:40.431 PATM: Stop monitoring IDT handler pages at 82391dd4 - invalid write 82391cf0-82391cf4

Is this of significance?

Bump.... I thought I had overcome this, but suddenly today these random aborts have become more common again. I cannot identify any particular conditions that are causing it.

Is there anyone from Innotek listening? Is there anything I should try?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

same Problem here.
OS: Kubuntu (Ubuntu 7.04)
Guest: Win XP

Now i tried to increase the amount of memory to 512MB, but still sudden aborts.
Doesn't matter if i am working actively with the guest or the vb idles...
I think this failure occurs since i switched from NAT to TAP device - can't confirm that thesis right now.

I also deactivated every other device like cd-rom, USB, audio, etc.
I found another topic which described it as a gtk-problem under Ubuntu. Anyone here who tested in this direction, yet?

Ok, after the changes i had no abort yesterday.
Perhaps i had forgotten something last time...?
Will keep you informed - btw. i updated my distro yesterday, too. Might have something to do with that, but i can' t believe because nothing was updated that should have something to do with the VB.

Running Kubuntu Feisty host with XP Pro guest. Nothing fancy, pretty stock, but I get 2-4 aborts (no error just closes) per day.

Other than that I have no issues with VirtualBox, it's awesome. But I need to figure out what can be done to fix this. I'm trying to test it for possible corporate use, but if they see this they will say forget about it.

Same problem here too. I created a ticket #557 but received no answer yet.

No support so switched to VMWare

Post by jcronkhite »

There doesn't seem to be an end in sight for this issue so I have moved to VMWare Workstation 6.0. It's unfortunate. I really wanted to use VirtualBox, but VMWare works and support from the company is great. I highly recommend VMWare as it runs great under Ubuntu 7.04 and it does not suffer from rendering problems when toggling full screen mode. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I uninstalled / replaced Zonealarm. Now my VB 1.4 runs without aborts.

that's the trick,
when I uninstalled ZA everything worked fine, but when I installed ZA again, the problem appeared again...

what do you use instead of ZA?

Install this firewall on the Linux Hosts. It works like a charm, 100 % like Zonealarm.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
echo -n Starting firewall.
while true; do
  sleep 1
  echo -n .
  if [ $(($RANDOM%13)) -eq 2 ]; then
     break;
  fi
  done
  echo
echo Your system is now secure\!
while true; do
  sleep $(($RANDOM%53))
echo "Blocked attack from host $(($RANDOM%256)).$(($RANDOM%256)).$(($RANDOM%256)).$(($RANDOM%255+1)) on port $(($RANDOM%65535+1))!!!"
done
exit 0
Best is to use the Firewall from the Router. Or a Firewall on the Host and NAT.
