Seemed to be a one time thing. Tried formatting a flash drive, and the XP machine aborted. Happens with 5.0.8 as well.

If you can provide a core dump, we'll look into it.

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
Thanks, I followed the instructions on obtaining a core dump (I'm not familiar with apport). However, the file size is too large (5.4MB), so can you suggest how best to provide this?michaln wrote:If you can provide a core dump, we'll look into it.
Here is the step by step actions:
Inserted memory stick (flash drive) into USB 2.0 port. Opened a terminal, ran the command:
echo -n 1 | sudo tee /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable
Then typed
Virtualbox
Set USB settings to USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller, added USB filter with default values for Genesys USB Reader [0545]
Started the VM (XP)
Opened Windows File Explorer, copied one file from C:\Temp to the memory stick, and the VM aborted.

I've uploaded the crash file to:michaln wrote:If you can provide a core dump, we'll look into it.

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
Could you please try VirtualBox 5.0.10? The problem is most likely fixed there. FYI, the problem is specific to Linux kernels older than 3.3.

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
I installed 5.0.10 manually by searching for it as the link provided by the VB Manager did not respond.michaln wrote:Could you please try VirtualBox 5.0.10? The problem is most likely fixed there. FYI, the problem is specific to Linux kernels older than 3.3.
Essentially, it works for USB 2.0 but not for 3.0.
If I set things up for 3.0, XP wants to install a driver? I realize XP does not normally support 3.0 without specific drivers, but I'm unsure if VB can take care of this?
If I physically use the USB 3.0 port but setup the VB to use 2.0 I get the following error on XP startup:
Failed to attach the USB device Genesys USB Reader [0545] to the virtual machine XP3.
Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_PDM_NO_USB_PORTS).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
I am using Linux Header 3.2, hopefully it will support Kubuntu 12.04 Precise when released.
Thanks for your assistance--it is greatly appreciated!

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
That is expected. Basically the problem is that you're trying to plug a USB3 device into a VM that doesn't have a clue about USB3. And that's not new either. But if the crashes are gone then that's good.Loaded4th wrote:If I physically use the USB 3.0 port but setup the VB to use 2.0 I get the following error on XP startup:

There may be a solution for USB3 in XP guests as well, please stay tuned.

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
Great! I'd just love to be able to abandon the dual boot setups on my desktop and laptop in favor of Linux and I'm almost there with the 2.0 port--still waiting for Audacity to stabilize .michaln wrote:That is expected. Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
I'm using the Eltron USB 3.0 controller chip, so I guess this won't work for me. Are there plans to expand this effort to other controllers?michaln wrote:See here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=74575

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
Please tell me why you think the controller on the host has anything to do with it.Loaded4th wrote:I'm using the Eltron USB 3.0 controller chip, so I guess this won't work for me.

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
Because you only refer to the Renesas xHCI controller with an extradata key, or the Intel chip (without the key) and I assume that the Eltron chip is altogether different. Is there something that I am missing?

Re: XP Aborted during MP3 transfer to player
The post talks about the virtual USB 3.0 controller inside the guest (and the drivers needed inside the guest OS). This has nothing to do with any hardware on the host.
