VB5 - Choppy audio

Post by bmn »

Host: Ubuntu LTS 14.04.2
VirtualBox 5.0 - Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.0 r101573)
Guest: Windows 8.1 x64
Host audio driver: PulseAudio
Audio controller: Intel HD Audio
4 CPU cores - 4 GB RAM - SSD

No matter what settings / combinations I try the audio is always choppy inside the VM. Changing to ALSA makes it even worse.

This seems to help a little but the glitches are still present: env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 /usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox --startvm

Tried changing the paravirtualization interface and it doens't help. It happens even on the Windows alert sounds or very small mp3 files. The VM is not lacking resources.

Any suggestion how to try to fix this issue? - It does have a huge impact on my ip telephony I need for my work..... :-(
I don't believe this have something to do with the performance as I am running it on a i5 vPro laptop with 16GB ram where host and guest does have 8GB each so there is planety of free resources to deal with a simple audio.....

thanks!

I've tried every combination of host audio driver and audio controller but the problem persists. The realtek drivers doesn't work on Windows 8.1 (for AC97) so if anybody got a working version please leave a link.

What did help a little was running VBox with

Code: Select all

env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60

The AC97 seesm fixed my issue - not yet 100% sure but much better...
I have downloaded the driver from realtek web. The only complication is that you need to boot the windows so it bypasses the driver signature check otherwise the installation will be not successful without any obvious error or whatever...

Switch your VM to use AC97 and install realtek drivers normal way after disabling the signature check using the steps here

let me know if that helped for you

I hope you have noticed that there are a number of audio fixes mentioned in the 5.0.4 changelog.

thanks for mentioning

Installed 5.0.4 and updated guest additions, rebooted and the problem persists. Tried Alsa / PulseAudio + Intel HD audio.

But it's ok, I guess eventually it will be fixed by a vbox update or an (host) OS update. Maybe it's something with my OS.

5.0.4 is even worse.... - it only sounds different.
The first few samples of the audio file are repeated 3-4 and then the sound is played... Kind of a shutter effect... :(

It seems that for windows .. only the Intel HD Audio produces sound... But the output is choppy even in 5.0.4 and worse with Windows 10

For Linux guests... the choice of ICH AC97 results in good solid audio .. in 5.0.4 .. The problem is that there does not seem to be a safe driver for windows for the AC97 emulation....

One hopes that the HD Audio emulation will get an update....

confirmed…
I don't mean to sound like a broken record (subtle audio reference) but, on my Ubuntu 15.04 host, my Windows 7 guest sounds bad, my Windows 10 (build 10547) guest sounds downright awful. Seems specific to Linux hosts. Seems even worse with the VB 5.0.5 r102780 test build. Linux Guests seem fine.
