Frustration with Win10 on VBox 4.3.28

Post by pcguy »

About to give up with running Windows10 builds past 10074 on Windows7 x64. Anything that build either locks up on Windows updates or BSOD when it does an upgrade to a newer build. I just did a clean install of 10130 and even that is having issues. Win7x64 has 5GB of RAM and is using 2GB of that for VBox.

I experience frequent VirtualBox Guest Additions video driver crashes (no BSOD) followed by reverting to the generic driver, otherwise it works. As for stuck Windows Updates it looks like a general issue not related to VirtualBox.

Well all I can say is that I had no such issue on the same machine with a competitor's Virtual machine software and the same build of Windows10. However with virtualbox its a dizzy loop of applying updates, having Windows10 crashing and reverting back to the pre update stage.

You're trying to install beta software, so what do you expect? I hope you're passing your beta experiences back to Microsoft.

FWIW, I have mentioned this elsewhere, I have Windows 10 installed as a guest on OSX, Windows 8.1 and Linux hosts. I have yet to have Windows 10 crash or roll back. The only issue I've seen is it not drawing correctly with 3D enabled on some hosts.

mpack is correct however, it is pre-release software.

Yes. The misleading part is the Windows 10 guest option currently available in virtual machine settings that makes you think Windows 10 (preview) is fully supported.

I feel your pain. There are also 7 OSX templates but there are no guest additions for OSX guests.

That doesn't follow. A template is provided because Win10 needs special settings, very similar to Win 8.1 in fact. But the OS itself is still in beta hence any allowances made for it are by definition preliminary at best.

Don is correct of course. And by definition beta software is inherently frustrating. There is good reason developers of software warn users not to install beta or pre-release software on a production machine. Makes no sense to ignore the warnings and then complain things don't work correctly.
