Enable 3D acceleration (in the VM settings) then install the Guest Additions, including the WDDM display driver.

@niko_130: I find it weird that you wait two years before bumping this topic, it makes me wonder what has changed.

I could open a new thread if this helps in tracking a possible bug

However here is some history:

2 Hosts:
Dell 755 - 8 gig ram - 240 gig ssd - quad core- Linux Mint 18
VirtualBox 5.0.18_Ubuntu r106667
Tried onboard Intel 915 video and AMD5450 video cards

Dell Inspiron 530 - 4 gig of ram, 500 gig hd - quad core - Linux Mint 18 and Ubuntu Mate 16.04
VirtualBox 5.0.18_Ubuntu r106667
NVidia 9500

I tried all Window rendering options (compiz, metacity. compton, etc)
I tried it 1 cpu all the way to 4 cpus

I installed guest tools and set video ram to 256 with 3d acceleration turned on and also toggling 2d acceleration as well

Install Windows 7 64 bit with 2 gig of ram

When I start W7 and choose SEAMLESS mode... either
VirtualBox session goes to ABORT (crashes) - nVidia (all drivers except open source)
or
It goes to seamless but no activity is drawn in any Windows unless I drag with window a little then it shows a picture but no live updates in that window unless I keep moving the window (directX game of PurblePlace - game that comes with W7)

I upgraded to VB 5.1

I boot into safemode and install 5.1 Guestadditions and reboot W7
Starting PurblePlace it says that no hardware rendering is available and the game will run with reduced performance
I ran DXDiag and it shows NO 3d acceleration

Tried installing VBGuestAdditions 5.0.16 and still not enabled
*in addition to Aero not working

It looks like you're using the disto's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

I did download from VirtualBox . org

July 12 5.1 release
virtualbox-5.1_5.1.0-108711~Ubuntu~xenial_amd64.deb

I have had problems on VB 5.x from all sources but I am on the above now
*and I cleaned VB off before i installed
(apt-get remove virtualbox*)

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

I fixed it...
I looked at the log and it shown "Host does not support 3d acceleration" (or something like that) but I knew that the AMD and NVidia do. However on these boxes, I added and remove so much hardware and upgraded so many times, something must have got borked in the OS.
I totally wiped out a machine and put a fresh Linux MInt 18 on it and immediately installed VB 5.1 on it and it all works normally

Thank you for the assistance
