I have the same problem:
-VirtualBox v1.4.0 with the additions installed
-Host: Debian etch kernel 2.6.18-4-k7 i686
-Guest: WinXP SP2
-Palm T|X
A USB pendrive work well in the guest, and the first time I connect the palm to the guest Windows reconice it like a new hardware and install the drivers OK. But when I want to do a HotSync do sounds like I plug and unplug the palm to windows.
Reinstalling all the palm software, I use Palmdesktop version 4.2, do the same.
I'm thinking about If the problem is the virtual guest don't have any COM port, I try to install one with the instructions off the VirtualBox user guide but do nothig ... I'm doing more test about it.
My dmesg since I connect the palm to the computer (with the guest active and the filter for the palm active) to the hotsync failure and power off the palm.

I'm not sure why the palm have 2 ttyUSB (ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1), in the VirtualBox USB filters only appears one Palm Handled.
