w2k guest,gentoo,amd64,palm sync

Post by needlern32724 »

VirtualBox (vb) -v 1.4, with the PUEL and the additions pkg. Gentoo host system. Kernel 2.6.21-gentoo-r3, amd64. I've got my usb: hp printer, mouse and keyboard all working on my w2k (SP-4) guest system. Palm device = Tungsten C (tc) and sync's consistently with jpilot. No probs there.

I've installed the Palm 4.1 desktop and the hotsync manager. Upgraded to the 4.1.4 version. The hotsync button is set up on the task bar. Configured for Local USB and network connections. I added the palm USB dev number from the vb Settings > USB > Add From (listed) devices. Start the w2k vm. When I hit the sync button on the tc it looks like it is syncing, but finally just times out and returns to the hotsync screen. The only, apparent, thing that happens in the w2k session is the hp printer icon (task bar tray) winds up with an exclamation mark over it, but still is able to print. I also lose the functionality of my separate USB mouse and my USB keyboard. While the hotsync button has been pushed, the w2k device manager does show the Palm handheld device as being connected. After the tc times out, the Palm device is no longer listed in the device manager list. No transfer of info from the tc has occurred. After closing the guest system, I unplug/re-plug my USB keyboard key and am able to use the separate USB keyboard again.

The kernel shows the following at w2k start up:

Code: Select all

usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 25
usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
visor 2-1:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected
usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usb 2-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1
visor ttyUSB0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
visor ttyUSB1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1
visor 2-1:1.0: device disconnected
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 25
The visor ttyUSB0/1 lines occur when w2k finishes booting up. Which, to me, indicates that the connections were handed off to w2k and therefore show up in the device manager section. The usb 2-1: USB line occurs when the palm finally times out.

Anyone able to sync with a similar set up? I saw a post that suggested disabling the visor.ko module. I don't have that module. visor is compiled into the kernel.

TIA,
Bill

wxp guest,debian etch,i686, >>>> palm sync <&

Post by Alex »

I have the same problem:
-VirtualBox v1.4.0 with the additions installed
-Host: Debian etch kernel 2.6.18-4-k7 i686
-Guest: WinXP SP2
-Palm T|X

A USB pendrive work well in the guest, and the first time I connect the palm to the guest Windows reconice it like a new hardware and install the drivers OK. But when I want to do a HotSync do sounds like I plug and unplug the palm to windows.

Reinstalling all the palm software, I use Palmdesktop version 4.2, do the same.

I'm thinking about If the problem is the virtual guest don't have any COM port, I try to install one with the instructions off the VirtualBox user guide but do nothig ... I'm doing more test about it.

My dmesg since I connect the palm to the computer (with the guest active and the filter for the palm active) to the hotsync failure and power off the palm.

I'm not sure why the palm have 2 ttyUSB (ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1), in the VirtualBox USB filters only appears one Palm Handled.
