OpenGL 3 and higher support on Win 8.1 guest

Hi,

i searched a lot but didn't found a clear statement about graphic card support on VM (Win 8.1).

I'm having a Win 7 host with Win 8.1 guest.
I need graphics card support from OpenGL 3 and higher.

Does VB supports it?
And if yes, what do I need to configure to have that OpenGL support inside VM for a powerfull CAD/Simulation-applicaiton?

Best regards,
MR

You need the graphics card on your host to support openGL 3.0 or higher. If you can't run the "powerfull CAD/Simulation-applicaiton" on your host it probably won't run in a guest.

The host supports OpenGL 4.4.
There is a NVIDIA Quadro K3000M.

But the guest hast just a "VirtualBox Graphic Adapter for Windows8" which supports OpenGL 1.1.

What do I need to configure on the guest to have a more powerfill graphics or isn't it possible at all?

It's not possible unless the developers decide to rewrite the drivers. I'm not sure why you would want to try and run a graphically intense app in a guest anyway. It's bound to be slow.

Because we need some testing environments for this applicaiton and
there was an idea to have several VMs for that instead of having a lot of real hardware machines,

well that makes sense but I guess you will have to wait and see if there is openGL 3.0 support in the future.

btw, I believe VB supports openGL 2.0.

Can you explain me how to enable OpenGL 2.0 support at least?

you have to install the guest additions and choose the WDDM driver. if you've already installed the guest additions with the DirectX driver I assume you would have to remove those first.

Can you tell me where to download the correct "Guest additions" for that OpenGL driver?

I have downloaded it from http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.12/
but it just contains the DirectX stuff which I uninstalled right now.

I believe it defaults to WDDM for Windows 8.1. It's been awhile since I installed 8.1.

I have uninstalled it and now there is grahpics card: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter

On reinstalling, there is no possibility to unselect the DirectX component.
