guest:winxp and vista

neither winxp or vista will install drivers for usb thumb drives. with or without the guest addons installed. tried with different drives as well. I know this worked in virtualbox 1.3.6 with both vista and xp. not sure what has changed. seems to me a virtualbox bug. unless there is a step in 1.4.0 that was not in 1.3.6 that i am missing

xp is ok after all
I was able to get the drive working in the xp guest. after playing with the filter but still no good in vista
