Corrupt graphics: Win8 guest additions + 3D acceleration

Post by bmn »

On 4.2.18 r88781 (the About says r88780), I'm getting corrupt graphics in a Win8 x86 guest on a Win8 x64 host. The moment Guest Additions are installed, no text is drawn, no bitmaps, just solid color empty squares/shapes (I saw a tray notification's round balloon). There are other symptoms as well. Disabling 3D acceleration in the host VirtualBox solves it. It looks like this:

A blog post here suggests it works okay with some older versions, and that it may depend on settings.

Is there a known workaround that does allow acceleration to work?

By the way, a warning message in the Guest Additions installer could help. :) I was about to give up and reinstall the guest OS, but I finally found that disabling 3D acceleration helps.

I have never seen that with a Windows 8 guest. Windows 8 guest with Guest Additions works fine on my Windows 8.1 x64 host.

Maybe it depends on the host's graphics card? I'm on an Intel HD 4000.

I found this topic Googling for the same issue! Same problem, same integrated GPU on the host.

Disable 3D acceleration and it'll work.

I'm bumping this topic because I have this issue too, I can confirm that disabling 3d acceleration "fixes" the corrupt graphics. I'd be interested in seeing this fixed, as I miss the graphics snappyness of the 3d acceleration

Try updating your host's graphics drivers.

Same thing on v4.3.16 r95972, Windows 8.1 x64 guest/host, latest Intel HD 4000 drivers.

Windows 10. VB 5.0.4 r102546. Intel HD Graphics (probably 4000). Same problem.

FYI, I reported the problem in the following thread and attached a debug log to my last post.

I have an Intel HD Graphics 4600, and am getting the same issue. The guest worked fine on my old machine which had an NVIDIA GeForce card in it.

This is fixed in latest Windows build (both 5.0 and 4.3) from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds
Please test. Do not forget to update guest additions.
