Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Please keep the discussion on topic. The topic is running Win8.1, not how to run VBoxManage.
Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Try putting the computer name quotes eg "Win 8.1".Lenh51 wrote:When I run the command suggested, I get this message:

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
I've tried the following and none of these work...
...a little help please? I've renamed it "win81ie11" to keep it dead simple. Dynamic structure is great but useless without a static example. I also updated to the latest version of VirtualBox though I'm willing to download an older build if others have had success that way.C:\MEDIA\OFFICE\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe setextradata win81ie11 VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B 1

"Doesn't work" contains no useful information.
"C:\MEDIA\OFFICE" is not the normal path to the VirtualBox program folder.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
A few of you replied to my post with:
put Win 8.1 inside quotes i.e. "Win 8.1"
I have done that and still get the same error message.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
try this...
find the Windows 8.1 .vbox file
make a copy in case
open the .vbox file with a text editor
paste <ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B" value="1"/> as the last line in the <extra data> section.
save
if it breaks, revert to the copy.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
THAT WORKED! Yeah VirtualBox is one of the programs that keeps dumping settings folders/files directly in to the My Documents folder. >__> It's an XML file so I opened it up with an editor and pasted it as the last element as you stated and it booted like a charm! Thanks!loukingjr wrote:try this...

VirtualBox 4.2.16, which has been released today, contains a fix for this issue.
Make sure to select "Windows 8.1" when selecting a guest OS type.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Make sure you set the Windows type to 8.1 64-bit. You have to scroll down a bit to see it. This error means you're installing 64-bit version in 32-bit vbox.Sreeram wrote:I tried the command i am getting the same error..C:\Windows\system32>"c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextra

There's nothing wrong with that and such a configuration is fully functional here.doomy wrote:Make sure you set the Windows type to 8.1 64-bit. You have to scroll down a bit to see it. This error means you're installing 64-bit version in 32-bit vbox.
