[SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Hi,
I have a problem with 32 & 64bits version, any idea ?
It's not the same error code, and I did what you said before ( <ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B" value="1"/>, and choosing Windows 8.1 for 32bits version or Windows 8.1 64bits for 64 bits version)
And also maybe related, at start, it said that "VT-x/AMD-V has been activated but is not working" but I have unchecked these in "system / acceleration".
Thanks for your help...

I believe you need VT-x for all versions of Win8, i.e. both 32bit and 64bit. The error message you mention usually means that VT-x isn't yet enabled in your host's BIOS, or else it means that some other software has already locked the feature for its own use.

Thank you very much! It worked flawlessly... (on a Mac host)
But I'm just curious... What exactly does this command do?
Tks again.

Nothing much anymore. It sets an option that wasn't enabled by default in the Win8 template - then VBox v4.2.16 added a Win8.1 template.CristianoVM wrote:But I'm just curious... What exactly does this command do?

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
am having the same "your pc needs to restart "problem.
tried this:
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B" value="1"/>
tried this:
"c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextradata [Windows 8.1] VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B 1
from my start/run menu
but both options will not solve my problem.
anyone? am using the latest virtual box version.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Hello,
I have problem with running Win8.1 x64 install:
My system configuration:
- Windows 7 x64 PRO
- 8 GB RAM
- Intel i7-2760QM ( BIOS: VT extensions ENABLED )
- VirtualBox 4.2.16 r86992 ( with latest extensions )
BIOS: I tried to solve this issue with:
1) Adding line to Win8.1.vbox file ( ExtraData section):
<ExtraDataItem name="VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B" value="1"/>
2) Running command ( with success - getextradata show 1 value ) [ run by my user / also run as Administrator ]:
3) Running command ( with success - getextradata show 1 value ) [ run by my user / also run as Administrator ]:
4) I removed VBox extensions.
5) Changing Processor, GFX Card ( 2d acceleration, 3d acceleration, 128 MB ram ) , VT options in Settings, Networking off/on, USB off/on - plenty of combinations...
6) Running again VBox install ( reinstall )
7) Uninstalling VBox and installing again.
Nothing helped. Anyone with idea how to solve this in my case?

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
That question is off-topic in this thread: however I'll answer quickly that "Program Files" is the name of the folder on English language systems. Presumably it's called something else in your language. If you need further help on using VBoxManage then please open a separate topic.
Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
Now the problem is different:
after run this command
Can you help me?
after run this command
Code: Select all
C:\windows\system32>"c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe" setextradata "windows" VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B 1
VBoxManage.exe: error: Failed to create the VirtualBox object!
VBoxManage.exe: error: Code CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005) - Server execu
tion failed (extended info not available)
VBoxManage.exe: error: Most likely, the VirtualBox COM server is not running or
failed to start.

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
I already told you that a discussion about VBoxManage is off-topic in this thread. I already cut you some slack by not deleting your last message, but now you really need to create another thread. In any case the command you are trying to execute is no longer required: simply use the new Win 8.1 template when creating the VM in the normal way.
Re: [SOLVED] Installing Windows 8.1 64 preview in VirtualBox
