Cannot install Windows 2000

I've just installed VirtualBox 1.4.0 on Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty 64-bit. No real problems with the installation. However, I cannot get Windows 2000 to install. The virtual machine boots OK and everything works up to the point where the system is just about to format the virtual partition. The Windows installation stops (having made no progress on the format) saying that it's unable to format the partition and the disk may be damaged.

It makes no difference whether I select FAT or NTFS format.

Having aborted the installation and closed VirtualBox, it does 'remember' the way in which the virtual drive is partitioned, but I assume that the 'partition table' doesn't exist in a virtual machine as it would in a 'real' one. So, it appears that VirtualBox is unable to write to the virtual disk.

Any suggestions, anyone?

I've attached the relevant bit of the log below. The point at which I get the error message is at 00:01:46:070 in the log. Is the earlier entry at 00:00:10:031 significant? What does it mean?

One more question....

Clicking 'Help/Contents' or keying F1 in VirtualBox does nothing. No help screen, no error message, nothing! Is this a 'feature' or am I missing part of the installation?

For some reason it seems Windows can not read and partition the raw disk image.

Boot the live (desktop) cd and try making a partition table with fdisk.

How to fdisk :

With Windows : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255867

With any Linux Live CD (err .iso): http://www.linux.com/howtos/Partition/partition-5.shtml

Set up a for c:\. You can do data partition for sharing (samba,nfs) if you like ...

The re-run the installer ...
If is a virtual machine, is it still broken ?

Thanks for your help. Before I posted my original request for help I wanted to try a manual fdisk but couldn't find a working bootable floppy - it's many years since I used any of them! In the end I ran the initial stages of a Windows XP installation - just as far as partitioning and doing the NTFS format. After that I was able to run the Windows 2000 installation by telling it to use the existing NTFS filesystem rather than re-format.
