Stefan, you're confusing me, and most likely others, with your last reply. Did it work and do you get the VB video working properly, or does it not work at noted above by selden?

It works (sometimes) crappy with Aero.

Anyone find a solution to the random freezing problem? It just happens, like after a few minutes. It might be loading, but no indicators really show that. Sorry I cannot be very descriptive about this because it's random and it seems impossible to predict. If any developers are interested in debug logs I can provide those if you tell me how (will rebuild with debug symbols if you need me to).

I'm glad Windows 8 doesn't actually take that long to boot, but it's VERY annoying and makes using it nearly impossible for me. When it freezes, I just hit Reset in VBox. It's just that much faster. I really just want to run IE 10 for testing sites and I do NOT want to have to install Windows 8 on another partition or another system just for that.

Unfortunately MS is getting really stupid about this browser lately, with IE9 requiring 7 and IE10 MIGHT require Windows 8 which means even more cruft in the browser market share! Do not tell me IE9 is good; it sucks just as much as 8. The performance is better than IE 8 but is still abysmal in comparison to any other browser (like 30% the speed of Chrome; tested on a real machine). IE 10 is hardly any better so far.

Installed x64 in VM with these settings (using OSE version on Linux):

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 8 (64 bit)
Base Memory: 2560 MB
Boot Order: CD/DVD-ROM, Hard Disk
Chipset: ICH9
Enable IO APIC: Yes
Enable EFI: No
Hardware clock in UTC time: No
Enable absolute pointing device: Yes
Acceleration: VT-x/AMD-V, Nested Paging, PAE/NX
Video Memory: 128 MB
Acceleration: 2D Video, 3D
RDS: Disabled
SATA Controller:
  SATA Port 0: my VDI
IDE Controller:
  IDE Primary Master (CD/DVD):
Audio: ALSA
Controller: Intel HD Audio
Network: Bridged, Intel PRO/1000
USB: Enabled
Shared Folders: 1
These settings are based on a blog post I found. Other combinations I tried did not work (the installer would just freeze at boot).

Also installed Guest Additions although they don't really seem to do anything yet. That's okay, but I still don't get why I have a random freeze. Reinstalling is an option of course. It's just a beta OS I plan to have as little as possible to do with (just as with every Windows).

One correction. It is not a beta. It is a conference preview release based on an internal alpha (M3) version.

In my case i had to disable the audio in virtualbox. Maybe you could try to disable things you don't require.

I installed guest addons, but it looks like W8 don't want to start the driver.

PS: Host - W7 64, Guest - W8 64, VB v4.1.6

Why not reading the thread, the last 2 pages is enough for this problem.

I started to read, but I stopped at

Not tested, but maybe this helps.
I haven't tested it, either. I'd rather wait until signed drivers are provided with VB.

There are no guest additions yet for Windows 8, so there is nothing to be gained by running the install.

Have you tried connecting to the vm using RDP from the host (so that you use the host's video card and driver)?

While there are no Windows 8-specific Guest Additions, and the GA graphics driver fails to load, most of the components of the Windows GA work fine -- shared folders can be used, for example.

I'm confused by this thread. Here is Windows 8 running full screen as a guest on a Mac host, guest additions installed and working.

Lou,

Unfortunately, the screengrab you provided does not prove that the VB Guest Additions graphics driver was successfully installed.
Please provide a screengrab showing the device status shown by Control Panel, similar to the one I've attached.
The documentation for the Guest Additions installation mentions popups for overriding the lack of a digital signature. Did you get those popups? I did not.

I didn't get the popups. I assumed the graphics driver was working because before I installed the guest additions I could only set the screen resolution to multiples of VGA settings. After installing I was in full screen at 1920x1080. I will look next time I am playing with W8.

edit: also Aero is working.

reedit: The driver is signed Oracle Corporation.

Lou,

Thanks for the info! Since the Guest Additions are part of the VB installer, it seems to me that the Mac installer may include a more up-to-date (signed) graphics driver than the Windows installer. One can hope that it'll be included in the next release of VB for Windows.
