Just downloaded the ISO from the MS website and getting this error...

Failed to open the CD/DVD image C:\Users\Carl\Downloads\Windows8-ConsumerPreview-32bit-English.iso.

Could not get the storage format of the medium 'C:\Users\Carl\Downloads\Windows8-ConsumerPreview-32bit-English.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)
Component: Medium
Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd}
Callee: IVirtualBox {c28be65f-1a8f-43b4-81f1-eb60cb516e66}
Can I do anything about it? Don't want to install it on my working machine, of course. Hence the installation of VB ;)

Thanks.

Had been able to run Win8 preview on VirtualBox using tips found in this thread.

Unfortunatly, after having ran windows update in the guest, it doesn't boot anymore

Good: I now have a working ISO
Bad: It boots straight into its "Recovery Environment"; see attached pic.

Oh look! Here's square one again :D

Was that a reply to both of us, stefan?

I have to say that I'd be surprised if mine didn't, but then I there's only one entry in the BIOS relating to Virtual Mode, but I can't quite remember what it said.

My system is based on an Athlon II x4 635.

Not really the guests log file. Right click on the guest in the main manager and then click show log. Save and post as an attachment.

I had the same, my fix was: settings -> system -> processor -> enable pae/nx

Enabling PAE/NX is highly recommended for Windows 8 guests. The setting is not required on all hosts but there's no harm in always turning it on for Windows 8 guests.

On an unrelated note, I highly recommend not changing the default chipset. ICH9 can cause a Windows 8 guest to randomly become unresponsive for periods of time (it will always come back after a while). There's no disadvantage to using the default PIIX3 chipset that we're aware of.
