Windows 8?

Post by selden »

This is, of course, slightly premature, but...

What problems is one likely to encounter when trying to boot Windows 8 in VirtualBox?

According to the "Building Windows 8" blog, the first Windows 8 Preview is expected to be made available tonight (PDT, I assume). See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011 ... eview.aspx

Likely problem: it will not boot at all. Other possible problems: crashing, BSOD in the Guest and other random stuff that will cause it to not work.

I would not even think of installing a pre-beta release in a vm.

Wanted to install Windows 8 Developer Preview today, but it won't install neither to VirtualBox nor to VMware Player :(

Unfortunately Windows 8 crashes in VirtualBox 4.1.2:
Your PC ran into a problem that it couldn't handle, and now it needs to restart.

Your can search for the error online: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (Wdf01000.sys)

OK, I've managed to install Windows 8 in VirtualBox successfully. Here are the required settings:

(Please, retain the copyright and give a link to this message if you repost this information)

Code: Select all

General: OS Type: Other/Unknown

System: Base Memory=1536MB
         Chipset=PIIX4
         [X] Enable IO APIC
         [ ] Enable EFI
         [X] Enable absolute pointing device

         Processor: 1
         [ ] Enable PAE/NX

         Acceleration
         [X] Enable VT-X/AMD-V
         [X] Enable Nested Paging

Display: Options don't matter - leave them as is

Storage: Remove SATA Controller
         IDE Controller: Type PIIX4
         IDE Primary Master: HDD 20GB
IDE Secondary Master: Windows 8 DVD

Audio: Intel HD Audio

Network: Adapter Type : choose "Intel Pro 1000MT Desktop (82540EM)"

Serial Ports: Leave as is (none required)

USB: Leave as is
Don't try to install VBox Additions - they won't install and they won't work (no workarounds exist currently).

Guest additions seem to install when run with Windows 7 compatibility mode but at least the video driver is not working correctly.

"Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware (error 37)"

Basically guest additions don't work (VBox system service also fails to start) so there's no point installing them at all.

Today I have downloaded Windows 8 developer edition & tried to install Windows 8 on VMware Workstation 7.1, but it fails with below error,
"vcpu-0:NOT_IMPLEMENTED vmcore/vmm/intr/apic.c" Solution for above error is to wait for VMware Workstation 8 which is going to launch in coming days or to install Windows 8 under VirtualBox 4.1.

You're a wizard. Thank you for posting this - worked like a charm. Only thing I wanted to mention is the bolded part. The IDE Controller didn't have PIIX2 so I left it at the default PIIX4.

Thanks again!

/edit .. FYI - with the default NIC card, there were no drivers installed. I changed it to the Intel 1000 desktop NIC card and Win8 installed it automatically and I had an internet connection.

It works fine in my VM, but I have freezes or lags every once in a while.
I don't know what's the cause.
I only know that the cpu usage on the host drops to 0% when the guest has it's lag.

Just FYI for a VBox Dev or whoever on guest additions, I tried doing a different method in hopes of getting it to work. I had extracted them using the /extract switch to a folder on the Windows 8 C: drive called drivers. I then tried to update the display driver in Windows 8 and I pointed it to the VboxVideoWDDM folder. It found the driver and tried to install but Windows 8 gave the following error "The extended attributes are inconsistent.".

Maybe there is a simple fix like editing the inf or something to trick it?

Why would anyone write guest additions for a pre-beta release of Windows which is not even supported under Microsoft's virtualization programs? All questions posted in their forums are referred to the developer forums.

Microsoft is still negotiating with manufacturers about hardware requirements for Windows 8. It is a bit early to think about guest additions.
