Then disconnect the device, remove the 'driver' from Device Manager, remove iTunes, run driver sweeper and let it purge the drivers if it can find the iPhone drivers, then reboot and install iTunes again. Reboot another time and keep your fingers crossed when you attach the iPhone to the VM. Use an empty filter first, so that every part of it is send to the VM, just to be sure.

Now, if that fails, put the VM aside and install a new one, get iTunes and see how that goes. If it works, then something in the Guest OS got weird. You can do whatever you want with the two VMs, but at least you know that it does work.

Hey kdotj, I was able to resolve the issue. If you're using the OSE version of Virtualbox it doesn't work. You have to use the version found on their website. Even though I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, I downloaded the version on their site for 10.10 and using Gdebi (sudo apt-get install gdebi) I was able to install it. All worked beautifully that way.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm using Arch Linux so I downloaded the generic AMD64 version of VirtualBox for Linux hosts.
I'll report back here after if it worked or not in case anyone in the future experiences the same issues.

Edit*

Half success.
The non-OSE version installed the drivers but only as a camera...
iTunes will not recognise my iPhone at all...

Any ideas?

Ah, hm. I wouldn't be able to help you there unfortunately, I didn't have to move past getting non OSE to get it working...

No worries, after some research I think I need to install some libraries in order for my Host OS to recognise my iPhone correctly. It would seem Ubuntu has these OOTB by default, not here on Arch lol

Why's the thread marked as solved when there's no solution? Did I skip over a hidden post or something?

I'm actually having this same annoying issue. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit) and VirtualBox, which was downloaded from this site. I'm running into the same problem on both my laptop and my desktop which have VirtualBox and Windows 7 installed as guests. I've did everything I can think of, from completely removing everything with Revo Uninstaller, rebooting the device, computer, guest, etc. Nothing works.

I don't think I had this in VMware, but I don't want to install that back.... Has anyone in the world ever gotten this fixed yet? I'm so annoyed... I feel like bringing my iPhone 4s back and getting a droid, just because I can't sync without having iTunes...

Have you installed the ExtPack too so you can enable USB2 support for your VMs? That is essential.

That's a good idea IMO. iPhones are way too limited anyway :P.

Haha, yeah. I'm a fan of "optional" features. Hate being forced into using something, because everyone isn't the same. Compatibility <3

Hello, It is not only when installing an Iphone or Ipod... it is when installing any new driver. I was trying to install a USB PIC programmer board device, and when i select the driver manually ('cause it does the same when automatic driver installation is chosen) it attempt to install the driver but then the error 10 (Device cant start) shows up, when trying to install the sound card device does the same. My PC OS is Windows 7, VM host OS is Windows XP. I really need to solve this issue cause that board i'm trying to install doesn't work on W7 and is my most important working tool :( Thanks ahead.

Same problem. Even tried upgrading to "VirtualBox 4.2 for Linux hosts" from the download page (used yum to remove and manually upgraded with rpm). After installing "VirtualBox 4.2 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" and enabling USB2, itunes saw the phone straight away. Not sure if it helped but I also reinstalled the guest additions.

I must say, it's hilariously slow thanks to Crapple's bloat but it should allow me to transfer my contacts to my new android phone.

I had the same problem with all the USB devices, including simple USB storage keys. And anon8432's hint to activate the USB 2.0 support was the solution:
- Install the extension pack (VirtualBox 4.x.x Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack)
- DON'T FORGET to activate the "Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller:
- Stop the guest.
- In the Virtualbox application, click on settings for your virtual machine.
- Go to the "Ports" tab, and then USB sub-tab.
- And enable the USB 2.0 support.

Thank you! ... Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller ... was exactly what fixed it for me. Most appreciated.
