Win98 Installation Notes (Vista Host)

Post by wcballance »

Do NOT install dial-up networking. If you do, you will notice an error on bootup that makes reference to vnetbios.vxd. If you have already installed it, just remove it using add/remove programs in the control panel.

Use video drivers available from http://www.geocities.com/bearwindows (found link by searching this forum -- thanks). I could not get 32 bit color to work when running 800 x 600, but 24 bit color worked fine. I used the drivers found in the ati folder.

Virtual CloneDrive found at http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html is a great tool to package your video drivers into an .iso that can be mounted in your Virtual Box. I'm sure I'm going to find other uses for it too!

WATNED: Information on how to get network drivers working. I tried searching the forums and did not find anything. Admittedly, I didn't read every post but I looked at anything that looked promising to me.

wcballance: thanks for the summary.

"Virtual CloneDrive" it's nice, but I prefer "MagicDisc". It's freeware, too. It supports:
* Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista
* Windows XP/2003/Vista x64 Edition

and some CD/DVD image formats: BIN, IMA/IMG, CIF, NRG, IMG/CCD , MDF/MDS, VCD, VaporCD, P01/MD1/XA, VC4/000, VDI, C2D, BWI/BWT, CDI, TAO/DAO, PDI

"MagicDisc" Homepage: http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso- ... istory.htm

I'd looked for Win9x-network-driver and AC97-sound-driver working in Virtualbox. But found nothing. Now I'm looking for free code to develop it.
In any case, we'll got the baby (win9x) into Virtualbox. ;-)

BTW: don't forget(!!!) to install "Rain 2.0". You find comments in many threads in this form why it's usefull to install in a Win98/Win98SE-GuestOS
"Rain 2.0" Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download430.html

AND don't forget to searched all *-PIF-files in your Win9x-GuestOS. Switch their settings to "full sized" sceen with "25 lines" mode. And don't forget to create and switch "_DEFAULT.PIF" in "C:\WINDOWS\" too!
At last create "STARTWIN.BAT" in "C:\WINDOWS\" with ony one line entry:
@echo off
This speeds up your Win9x a little bit. ;-)
Any more could be made with "Tweak UI" ( http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui ).

Networking: this one might be helpful: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=866
I used a similar approach for Win98SE. My host is a Win XP Home SP1 system.
