press f8 before win-xp starts and you will see an option "disable automatic restart on system failure" with that option highlighted hit enter it should come up with the BSOD!

post what it says

I assume it doesn't recognize the drive, but i tried switching the emulator from PIIII to PIII and even ICH (i believe) with no luck. disabling the I/O checkmark with PIIII makes it crash right after the bios

I checked and 0x00007B seems to mean "inaccessible boot drive", meaning that my configuration settings is incorrect and the OS cannot find the drive.

so does this mean that I should try to find out precisely what is my boot drive, then configure VirtualBox to that?
this is my internal drive

I think I figured it out. my HDD is IDE, but it appears that VirtualBox only emulates SATA.

now what?

wow you certainly did your Googleing ok what you need to do is go into you storage settings. As you said your hdd is ide and not sata so what we want to do id remove the sata controller and drive then add a new ide controller and new ide drive then you select your hdd let us know how u go

well it originally was on ide (and I fiddled with the options to no avail) so I tried switching it to SATA with no change.

A little more research indicated that it may not have the necessary disk drivers, but the computer boots into that partition fine.

one other thing is that when XP is starting to boot, it shows this progress bar that's similar to the one used when coming out of hibernation mode, but without the text that says that it is unhibernating is absent. then it shows the usual xp startup screen, then crashes.

Wow you have me baffled all the things I would be doing now if I had this problem would be:
- Boot from hard drive not virtual machine and make sure that os boots and shuts down correctly
- Make sure IO APIC(in system under motherboard)
- Try booting the virtual machine and see what happens possible see if the BSOD message is the same
- Try different hard drive controllers
- Installing guest add-ons (it may have a driver or two, you will have to extract the iso)
- Try VMware player
That’s all I can think of let us know how u go

It boots from hard drive fine, which is good because I need to use it every day.
IO APIS is checked, never unchecked
Installed Guest additions, no change
tried different hd controllers.
-sata with "I/O cache" checked crashes while booting
-sata without "I/O cache" unchecked crashes as soon as I select the XP partition and hit enter.
-IDE PIIX3/4/ICH6 made no difference when "use host I/0" is checked
-IDE with "use host 1/0" unchecked crashes instantly
I tried VMWare player, but it refuses to recognize my .VMDK file or my HDD

I think I figured it out.
This was a new computer that was downgraded to Windows XP.
However, it uses SATA so XP was installed for that.
I'd have to reboot to confirm, but I believe AHCI is enabled.
Setting the virtualmachine to that fails.
What I'm guessing is, the XP is installed for SATA use, but it doesn't recognize the sata emulator As the version used on this computer is different enough from what virtualbox emulates that XP can't use it).
so, I think I need to figure out how to install the right drivers.
following another thread, I downloaded the correct drivers, but the installer recognized an invalid chip set and fails.

I'm beginning to think this is impossible, unless I can somehow convince xp to be able to boot a different SATA drive or something.

Help??
