Keyboard and mouse not working

Post by reidrobot »

I boot Windows XP Professional SP3 in vbox 3.2.8 (guest) and it gets to the login in screen and I'm unable to type, use the mouse or install the additions. My host is Vista home premium 64 bit. Also, originally, I copied the virtual hard drive from microsofts virtual pc 2007 (copied it from folder to the correct harddisks folder in .virtualbox), then created a new machine.

If you set a USB filter for the keyboard and mouse in the guest settings you need to remove them. They are shared resources and can not be included in the USB settings.

I've looked under the USB filters and I haven't set any USB filters for the keyboard or Mouse (or for anything actually).

Did you also remove the VPC additions before you copied it to VBox?

Did that. Still doesn't work. BTW I have set microsoft virtual pc to open it as well, for the time been, to give me chance to make changes.

Should not make a difference unless VPC has a hook on it. I have used various VPC files and the only problem I ever had was when I did not remove the VPC additions.
Post the VBox guest log file (as an attachment) and let's see what it says.

Disable the USB section for the guest (take the checkmark out of enable) and see if it works.
I am seeing [/USB/HidMouse] and I don't think I should.

It may also be that you need to start in safe mode and remove the mouse and reboot, then remove the keyboard and reboot. Do not do both at the same time.

What do you mean remove the mouse and keyboard? How do i do that on the guest? FYI i couldn't log on in safe mode because i can't type the password due to the keyboard not working.

If you can not log in by using safe mode (which should allow the mouse and keyboard to work) you will not be able to remove the devices.
Did you disable the USB in the guest settings?

I don't know what else to tell you. It may just be one of those times I guess. You are certain that you are removing the Windows VPC additions, right? This has always been the problem for things like these in the past.

I have removed VPC additions. I'll see if any one else on the forum suggests anything in the mean time.

I did run into this same exact problem. I was just about to uninstall the product when I stumbled on your thread here. The solution I did was the one already mentioned. Shut down the guest OS, go to Settings, down to the USB tab, and un-check the Enable USB Controller box. Once I did this, I started the guest up, and the mouse and keyboard both worked at this point. I haven't re-enabled that check box yet since I will eventually need USB support, but for now it has allowed me to install the tools and get the guest functioning.
