SBS 2008 x64 guest - Blue Screen Of Death BSOD

Post by benc »

Host: Win 7 x64
Guest: Small Business Server 2008 x64
Physical RAM: 8GB
RAM for guest: 4GB
CPU: i5 660
Cores for guest: 1

I've created a new virtual machine in VirtualBox 3.2.0 for this server, and I'm using the type "Windows Server 2003 x64" as this seems the closest to what I'm trying to do. I have created a 75GB disk (IDE controller) and have left everything else as default.

When I boot to the ISO for SBS 2008 I get through the part asking for language, disk to install on, license etc, then when it is copying the files over for the install I get a BSOD. I'm running an XP (32 bit) guest without any issues.

Ideas?

Read Chapter 12.3.4. How to record bluescreen information from Windows guests in your VirtualBox users guide (troubleshooting) and post the information obtained.

I've attached the screenshot of the BSOD, and the VirtualBox log.

Try it with a lower RAM setting in the guest. Say 2GB and see if it installs.

I've been fiddling around with this quite a bit and I did try exactly that, and it made no difference. Other things I've tried are running virtualbox as admin, and disabling the virtual network adaptor. Nothing has helped so far.

From the host command window (prompt) type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details --machinereadable and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

There was one part of the original post which I found odd.

I've created a new virtual machine in VirtualBox 3.2.0 for this server, and I'm using the type "Windows Server 2003 x64" as this seems the closest to what I'm trying to do.

I see a Windows 2008 (x64) option, which is what I use for 2008/2008R2. Windows 2008 implies Windows Server 2008. The client OS was called Vista, not 2008.

I have installed 2008R2 on a very similar system (Windows 7 x64 on i5 750) without any problems. There must be something specific to your particular setup causing the problem (which hopefully the showvminfo will indicate).

Sorry, selecting Server 2003 x64 was a proper school boy error. I hadn't noticed that you could scroll down to select other operating systems...

I've created a new virtual machines (using Windows Server 2008 x64) and still get the same issue. Here's the output from VBoxManage as requested:

Please try to disable "Nested Paging". (VM settings->system->acceleration)

I created a new VM and disabled nested paging, and it's looking VERY promising - No BSOD and I'm further into the OS install that I've ever got. Thanks a lot for the tip - I'd actually just installed a 30 day trial of VM Workstation which was working very well. Hopefully I won't need to buy this now!

Updating to 3.2.2 will make sure you won't get errors with Nested Paging any more, as it contains a fix for that.

The error 'STOP 0x7B' means a hardware or software problem. If it worked before, then I would check the VM settings and make sure you didn't change any vital parts, like disabling IO APIC or VT-x/AMD-V. If that is still the same, you have to consider it a software problem and that is not in the scope of this forum.
You also post your question off-topic, because this is about 2008 server and you have 2003 server. Big difference.
