USB greyed in 3.2.0

Postby jcglt » 19. May 2010, 09:51

I run Windows XP as guest on VirtualBox 3.2.0 with Linux Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 as host.
When I start VirtualBox I can read on "Details" "USB" 3 device filters "active".
When Windows XP is running I click on top of screen on "Devices" then poining on "USB Devices" I can see my devices GREYED and I cannot click in them. Pointing on the USB icon (down right of screen) I can read "Indicates the activity of the attached USB devices - No USB devices attached".
Eventually I typed the following command in a terminal : VBoxManage list usbhost and I got this

jean-claude@jean-claude-laptop:~$ VBoxManage list usbhost

I would like to have my USB devices working, more specially my Canon iP90 printer and an USB key. Any comment and help will be appreciated.

Did you add your login to the vboxusers group?

Yes I did add my login to the vbox user group. What is amazing is that informations are not the same according to the place you pick them :
- when Windows XP is running "unavailable" as answer to "VBoxManage list usbhost" command AND "no USB devices attached" bottom right OR "active" when XP has not been started.

Well, some news : my problem could be related to my printer iP90, which works normally under Windows XP, which does not work under Linux Ubuntu and this morning I had a new display of "devices" "USB" on top left of VirtualBox when XP is running, now 3 of the 4 lines are not anymore greyed, the only grey line remaining is iP90 ; same bottom right the USB icon will display an attached USB device if the top left square is marked with a "V" except of course for the greyed iP90.
Things are improving for a reason I don't understand as compared to yesterday there were 17 Ubuntu updates today but I don't see anyone related to my problem.

For USB printers your linux account must also be in the "lp" group in addition to the "vboxusers" group.

Re: USB greyed in 3.2.0 SOLVED

Postby jcglt » 22. May 2010, 02:48

SOLVED
I did not succeed in having my iP90 recognized and working properly under Linux Ubuntu 10.04 BUT I bought the TurboPrint software, which installed very easily and now I have a Canon iP90 working nicely, with all the capabilities it has on Windows XP, I mean much more capabilities than with the Canon drivers for Linux. I am very much satisfied with it.
Thanks to all.

@Kjelland,
  • Type id in a terminal on the host and post the results here.
  • Also lsusb and post that as well.
  • And finally from the host terminal type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details --machinereadable and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

What is the host? No profile and no stats make it impossible to help.

Apologies, I forgot I've not updated my profile. The host is Linux - Mandriva 2010.0 with the 3,2 rpm from Oracle installed. I have added tried the fstab addition suggested in another thread and the correct users are connected to the correct groups as the docs suggest. Neither printer works in the Devices menu for the guest (they are both there but greyed out), the Epson works from from Mandriva although the HiTi wont work in Mandriva it does see it. Not sure what else to say, what is needed to progress this? I'm more than happy to try anything ....

Wow, this forum has been surprisingly useful. I got my virtual box USB devices active again by adding my "user" to the "IP" Group in:

System > Administration > Users Settings > Groups Settings > IP(Double Click) > (Check)"User" Ok.

I didn't think I had this problem the first time Using Virtual box OSE, but I did try all kinds of things when I originally installed the non-free version with "Ubuntu Software Installer" That one had no USB device menu at all. I started having trouble after upgrading a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Also I found that TurboPrint Software worked great to solve my only other current gripe about Linux, Printer Support. CUPS does not support Cannon MP620 not including the hit miss MP610 Driver, and the MP620 Driver Projects available on-line. 35.94 US$ after trial may be a bit much to print docs, but at least the support is there if you need it quick.

Thanks, the adding "user" to IP group tip worked for me.
