How to set up a modem with VB 1.5.2

Post by LesDes »

Running W2K Pro in W2K Pro

I want access the modem and the manual is out of date. It documents only two parameters for a serial port: Port Number and Port Mode.

However selecting Host Device **insists** on a third field: Port Path (serial device name).

I have tried the name of the modem as reported by Windows without luck (I have posted a query a few days ago)

In desperation I repeated the Port Number (COM3) and bingo! the OS loads!

But... there is no sign of the modem in the OS :(

Maybe I need to install the modem driver?

Did you setup a serial port?

Machine\Settings\
then add Serial port like Host Device /dev/ttyS0 or ttyS1

We are talking a Windows guest. I would have assumed that after telling VirtualBox that the VM has a serial port, it would do something that the guest OS would recognise as a serial port hardware and the OS would install the drivers appropriately.

I am not aware of any way I can create a COM port in Windows if the hardware is not physically there. VirtualBox has to present the guest OS with such hardware.

LesDes: since this is a COM modem, just choose "Add Hardware"->Modem
and it will be autodetected. All hardware modems have drivers *inside* Windows.

Does modem works if you access to modem from Host ?

Reply to Technologov:

Done as you suggested and Windows auto-detected something installed port COM1.

When I try to install the modem driver it only comes up with COM ports 2 to 5 but selecting any of those comes up with hardware not found.

The VM **is** detecting the modem port on the host (COM3) because if it is in use then the VN refuses to boot up.

Getting warm but not quite there yet.

Reply to Stefan:

The modem is a PCI internal Multitech modem. It works fine in the host as COM3.

Forget it.

Com3 is in Windows a Virtual Port made by Modem Driver, not a real Comport.

That cannot work.

Best thing is to buy a serial Modem or use NAT Network, Host has to connect to Internet.

I try all the suggestion above. It won't work. Best solution is to run microsoft virtual pc to run old serial devices. Networking is easier too as there are no NAT, Host interface, etc to worry about.

When i need to run old usb device. Vbox works good.

Can somebody help explain please? :?:

Thanks, I understand. It seems rather a limitation though that I cannot use an internal modem.

Serial ports have virtually disappeared by now.
