domain login from Windows XP guest

Post by mec »

Hi,

I have a problem with the login to a domain from the WIndows XP login screen at the beginning right after the start of Windows.
Let me explain one after the other what happened or I did:
First there is a PC using Windows XP. After the windows boot there comes the login screen (after CTRL-ALT-DEL) from which a user could login local or using a windows domain from a domain server. This works fine.
After some problems with the hardware it was decided to clone the two hard discs and use them in VirtualBox on a new PC. It was easy to create the .vdi images of the two discs without any problems.
The new PC is running slackware linux as the host system.
The two images from the XP install are working fine, a local login is possible without problems and the normal desktop is there and everything is fine - when logged in locally.
For the network "Host only" is used in VirtualBox and linux host and XP guest have both IP addresses in the same subnet which is also used by the domain server. The Internet is working fine from the XP guest (web, ssh,...) and the XP guest has also the same IP like the real XP PC before.
But if the login to the domain from the windows login screen is selected then it is impossible. Windows says that the domain controller couldn't be found or the user place.
But after logged in locally, going to windows networks and selecting the domain server a popup comes asking for username and password for the domain. After giving it all resources from the domain could be accessed - and the username/password is of course the one which also should be used in the login screen; but hasn't worked there :(

Does anyone know why the domain login is not possible when using the XP install in VirtualBox?

Cheers,
mec

Only with Bridge networking mode, see the Manual.

There is only
NAT
Host Interface
Internal Network
to choose from in the network setup in Virtual Box (2.1.4).

EDIT: Just installed version 3.0.10 of VirtualBox and found the bridged mode. Will see if I could find something in the manual which could help.

Be sure to get the latest manual. It's also shipped with VB, accessible through Help > Contents.

Ok, I have now bridged mode working and installed the Guest Addons with GINA support.
But in the manual(from the help menu) I find only something about automated logins - which isn't what should happen because there are more than one user...
The login to a domain at the Windows XP login screen is still not possible. :(
Does anybody has a hint or an idea what should be done to get it working?

Is the computer registered at the domain?

I think it ist. The old PC was registered and in VirtualBox it's the copy of the hard discs and so the same Windows XP from the old PC used.

But that's the problem then. The account has been suspended in the domain because of the change. Check the Active Directory for the computer account, remove the system itself from the domain, remove the computer account and add it again manually.

I'm having a similar problem except that in my case, after joining the Windows XP virtual machine to the domain and rebooting, XP comes up with the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del" screen to log-in, and Ctrl Alt Del will not work. I've done this twice now (deleted the first VM and started over "from scratch"), and both times after rebooting (the first time after successfully joining the domain), the keyboard (or at least Ctrl Alt and Del) does not work, so I can't log in to the virtual machine.

Section 3.4.1.2 (Typing special characters) of the manual:
Host key + Del to send Ctrl+Alt+Del (to reboot the guest)
The 'Host' key is configurable, but is Right-Ctrl by default.

I seem to have the same problem. I happen to have a backup that I'm able to login with but as soon as I restart it I'm no longer able to login and have to restore from my backup again.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows XP service pack 3 as a guest and Virtual Box 3.0.8. Has anyone found a solution for this?
