Windows 7 no usb drivers found

I installed Windows 7 64-bit on a kUbuntu 64-bit host. Though windows itself seems to run, I cannot get it to work with a usb-serial cable. In the usb icon, I select the USB device, then windows reports it cannot find a driver for it. I do have the vbox extensions installed, and shared folders work. Device manager says there are no drivers available. This is probably a configuration problem, but I can find nothing in the manual. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Edit: Do I need a specific windows driver for this device? That won't work, as there is no vista/7 driver for this device.

Edit further: I tried using settings > Serial Ports, setting Port Mode to Host Device, and the path to /dev/ttyUSB0
Windows reports that the com port is not available or in use by other software. Linux is seeing the device on /dev/ttyUSB0.
